Large Predatory Haps?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My sand diver (fosso) and macrostoma did grow up together in a 750g tank. When I gave them away they went into a tank that was ~150g and then thats when the problems began. They were both ~10-12".

My advice for the best chance of long term success is growing a group of male haps out together, and add the species that are known for the most aggression, last. Also, keep only 1 male per genus.

You also need to be prepared to juggle fish around if/when something doesn't work out as planned. As an example, I have tried on 3 separate occasions to grow out a juvie male N. venustus in my tank (with adult haps), and the moment they got some size to them, and became sexually mature, they became hyper dominant and had to be removed. I know many others that have had zero issues with their male venustus, so I guess for myself it just wasn't meant to be.

Thanks for all your help, and i know the amount of questions i'm asking and the many times i've changed my mind must be very frustrating, but thanks for continuing to help me out. :)

I guess i'll just wait till i get the tank and make an order for some relatively same-sized male haps all at once and grow them out together.

No problem, glad to help. Better you ask now, than after you have the fish. ;)

Ughh, that's not what i wanted to hear, maybe i'm not cut out for haps.

Do you think they'd be better together if grown up together, similar to Central American cichlids?
Why not try C.Boreliy sorry about the spelling but they are very mild mannered. I have 2 males and three females in a 90 with two 8 inch buccochromis n. species and a 6 inch mollotto. The fish get along perfectly and I also have a large adult s.angelicas catfish in there. Even the females of the boreliy have some nice color on them.

Here's my stock in my 125g. Very active and colorful tank. Feeding time is a blast; if not a little wet too :)

F. Rostratus
Livingstoni
D. Compressiceps
Crtocara Moori
Mozmbique Tilapia
Venustus
Nimbochromis fuscotaeniatus
Exochochromis anagenys
Champsochromis caeruleus
Raphael Catfish
Pleco
