Large Rock

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Bois Blanc Island, Michigan. Its off of the very northern tip of the lower peninsula.

i noticed quite a few threads of people wondering about large rocks in their tank and one thing i havnt heard anyone say is that a 50 lb rock doesnt weigh 50 pounds in the water.........i could be wrong

It'll be displacing about 10-15lbs of water by the looks of it, don't think there's enough water in the tank to effect it tho...hhmmm...gonna have to think about that. Good point.

oohhh, L. Superior agate. Tumbled it looks great in a tank...I'm from Mt.Clemens on L. St. Clair No. of Detroit.

Could I use the plate from my UGF that is just laying around to displace the weight of my rocks?

I like using styrofoam as a cushion for rocks, it disperses weight and cushions in case of shifting.

Have you chemically tested that rock, depending on its composition it could cause PH/GH/KH changes.

In order for water to have a positive effect on the weight of a object the object have to have some degree of bouyancy, Positive vs Negative bouyancy.
What it will have a effect on is the weight of the total tank/stand setup, this is due to water displacement.

Regardless,
a 50lb rock, negative bouyancy, exerts 50lbs of pressure on a single point of contact.

Not for anything of substance, plastic is to thin / brittle and there isn't that much contact area with the bottom glass to distribute weight. I dropped a small (1/2lbs) rock on one of mine and it shattered.

Thanks DrJoe,

I guess I will look for some eggcrate. I think I have some lying around somewhere.
