Wouldn't egg crate make it difficult to remove trapped detritus and possably cause anerobic pockets?

not if placed directly on the bottom glass, if treated like a plenum then yes.

Yes, but it's the price to pay for a 'look'. The rock itself will trap gunk beneath it too. Pick it up every week when the tank is cleaned. (you do clean your tank every week don't you? :D ) If it's a bb tank maybe aggressive W/C's would help.

Good place for g. shrimp to hide...

I have to disagree somewhat with the Dr..
A eggcrate placed on the glass with substrate on top should be easily cleaned with a good vacuuming, the openings of the eggcrate face upwards and the substrate/waste within will be lifted out if you have decent suction.
Unless the substrate is deep and not vacuumed/stirred regularly, then there is a very small chance of anerobic pockets.

If it was a BB tank then it would be even easier to vacuum the eggcrate and zero chance of anerobic activity.

What about the 12-16sq in. directly under the rock, I'm not clear on how your vauuming there without moving the rock...

The rock that I took pictures of I have now broken into 3 pieces with the trusty sledge hammer. Now I have a piece 25lbs, 19 lbs and 17 lbs, these still too heavy to place without support underneath?

Half inch glass should hold those...but...one slip moving them could be disasterous.

If there are sharp corners or edges that will act like feet, you could build-up a couple beads of silicone to soften them.

What :WHOA: ...No video you weilding the might sledge and devastating the stome  .

Hey, we like the thought of hitting anything with a sledge hammer :D .

I probably only going to put the two smaller pieces in the tank probably about 10 inches apart with a flat piece of slate over the top of them to create a little house/cave. When I broke them they did break with a fairly even edge which I plan on putting on the sand substrate. See anything wrong with this? by the way,my substate is around 2" deep.

You setup sounds fine, just make sure you stir the sand frequently.
