I wouldn’t do tiger barbs - they have a tendency to kill each other off more than they actually school.
I use Buenos Aires tetras with mine and he leaves them alone.
I agree that especially while young, you will want a lot of floating cover or tall plants to hide in.
Wood, rocks, or pots all work for cover as long as the fish can completely hide behind.

He uprooted all the plants, rearranged all the sand and was chasing the sponge filters so I lifted them up using suction cups and zip ties but now he’s attacking the suction cups. There are about a dozen guppy fry we tossed in for food but he hasn’t eaten them. He has eaten every ramshorns snail he can find

Oh and now he’s attacking the pit and rolling it around. I have a background cut but not on it yet. Water will get filled back up was experimenting with keeping him from jumping until the lid arrives

Thank you for the video I will look into black sand today as well as getting the background put on. I will get to the store for some fish as well.

There is no cover. Start with a dark background and provide something he can hide under. Preferably something that is open from two or more sides.

I’m looking for some rocks or driftwood. I have a large ship I had planned to put in there but it was too small and he got stuck

I've recently taken to putting pothos (house plant) on top of my tanks and letting them droop down in the water. This provide cover for them to swim under but doesn't take up space in the tank. Plus they help with filtration.

It's that elusive win/win/win Michael Scott was looking for...
