Large Tank Filtration

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Great thread!

It seems we share the same tastes in equipment. I'm running my Ultima with a Reeflo too (Champion Primer in my case). The automatic backwash jets are incredibly convenient!

Looks like you've got fun times in your near future. Too bad it all has to happen in such an ugly place! ; )

So you like your Ultima? I know Spiff went from a wet/dry to two Ultimas. Even though we plan on having a generator in place, with the frequent power outages in our area, it seemed that the Ultimas were the better way for us to go...and besides, we needed the sump for the Clarity CL-3 to run off of.

We're still have a long long way to go before our fish room is a reality. To have my dream fish room, we had to go DIY. Tons of rain this spring hampered our build. Last week was the first week it did not rain. On Thursday, the trusses started being put in place.

We still have to put up the trusses between the 2nd story and the garage.

The tank will be an in-wall tank. We have 1" clearance on either side to get the tank through this space

The window space is unfinished, as the tank will have to go through the window area to get into the fish room.

We have to change the sump tank, as the one I wanted is no longer available. Plan to order one when we get back from vacation 7/13. I spoke to the company today, hoping I could order it and have them delay the shipping, but it was no go. We going with the FT336W2

Once we have a roof, I'm going to start ordering my filtration stuff. Today, I ordered thirty-five 5' lengths of 1.5" black PVC. Had trouble finding black PVC. Painting white PVC with black Krylon Fusion paint doesn't work for us. Our boys hit the pipes so hard, they've rubbed some of the black off. We only have 11 holes drilled in the top of the tank, so we'll have lots of replacement PVC! (Our big boys have broken bulkheads by ramming into the pipes so hard)

Nothing by half measures hey. Go monster or go home.

You realize what this means right? Not only is this a DIY job but this will have to be updated daily or we will hound you. lol.

Can't wait to see this take off.

Don't want to do that. The build is going too slow. I absolutely don't want 97 pages of fluff extending over a year. When it's all said and done, I'll do a thread from beginning to end with pics of everything.

Meanwhile, the filtration room is going to be fairly tight (with all the stuff going in). Unfortunately, the plans were based on a wrong length measurement. While we gained almost 2 feet in overall length, we lost space in the equipment room. Instead of the garage being at a 45 degree angle to the fishroom, it is at a 38 degree angle, which translates into a smaller triangular area between the fishroom and the garage.

I just took this pic. There's a line in the cement which demarcates where the back of the main tank will be. The small board on the cement is covering up one of the two large floor drains plumbed into the floor.

Anyway, that's all for now. Hopefully, in 6 - 10 months I'll have my dream fish room. I'll put a thread in the photo section when it's all done.

Can't believe we are going to have to wait that long. But it will be just in time for Christmas.

How are you going to fix the problem. So is the tank going to be covering the drain as well?
