Hey... Awhile back I collected a wild specimin of largemouth bass. He is 8 inches long, I live in California. The pond I caught him from, which is unnamed literally, a football field sized pond containing only bluegill and most-likely stunted largemouth bass, is right behind my house and I can walk to it from my back yard.

Should I release my bass?

It depends on what you're keeping him in and with. Where in Ca. do you live?

I am keeping him in a 55 gallon currently, and moving him to a 160 gallon. There are three bluegill in with him as well. Santa Cruz county. I could not find particular laws for this county.

I think it depends on a few things, but besides the laws, i would be concerned if the pond is connected to any other lakes etc in the area... coz the last thing you want to do is release a fish into the wild which could bring other diseases into the eco-system...

I would keep it. As far as legality, I don't think it's a problem. When I was in high school, we had a LMB in my biology class, and I'm pretty sure my teacher wouldn't have done anything illegal. Make sure it gets into that 160 if you do keep it, especially with the bluegill in there also.

The pond is not connected to any lakes or streams, it is quite isolated, and I've viewed it on mapquest. I have heard that the pond is composed mostly of street runoff and the majority of fish in it are stunted.

I really enjoy this bass, but I would like to be humane and follow the law.

What are you feeding it?

When I first got it I fed it rosy red minnows...

Lately I have been feeding it freeze-dried as well as red frozen bloodworms.

Can you post a pic of it. I'd like to see it's color.
