I was just at the local petsmart and the guy they had catching fish was so under trained that he literally had no clue what fish he was catching. one example is I asked him to get me a baby green severum, he netted a gold one which was more than twice the price of the green. So I said get me another one! The I asked for a baby firemouth, he lets me pick it out and then he bags it, but marks it as a baby JD, half the price of what I asked for. How did he mix up firemought with JD when I just told him firemouth a minute before?

Anyhow, I got some really nice babys to start my tank with and got a good price just because they didn't train the staff. Heck, he couldn't tell the difference between a green and gold severum, you'd thing the green and gold in the name would be a clue, lol

The new babies are now in a 75g along with 3 baby jewels and a 3" pleco. Time to let them grow :D

In all of your "I'm better than you" wisdom did you bother to help the poor untrained employee out, or did you leave without sharing your knowledge only to have the poor guy screw up with customers who may not know much?

These "stupid petsmart" threads get annoying because people don't always try and help the employees out, which in turn helps the hobby......:)

the mans got a point. you should have shared your knowledge with the guy and , who knows, he may even have been very interested in what you had to tell him. i know you got a bargain because of his lack of training but how many people will he mislead or how many fish will he unwittingly kill until the training gap is addressed.
on the other hand the shop should really train their staff properly as its not our job to train them.

You are correct, it's not your job to teach them. But on the other hand, when you take a fish home without research and something bad happens, don't be such a crybaby about how it's the LFS, LPS, or PetSmarts place to have taught you something that maybe they thought was just common sense.

By knowing the price was higher and not saying anything, isn't that the same as stealing? So you saved a couple of dollars, big deal, is it worth your integrity? I think not.

Plus now the kid could possbily be fired for the screw up. Well as long as you can sleep at night.

:iagree:

Karma will come into play here too! What you give is what you get!

I'm on board here. Everyone's gotta start learning sometime. I'm sure there was a point in time when you knew less than he does now about fish.

Ok, so I am supposed to teach this kid colors? I clearly stated "Give me a GREEN Severum" he looks in the tank and there are only green and Gold ones in there, very easy to see the difference. Out of all those green ones he picks one of the very few gold ones. Of course that must be my fault.

Then I tell him Firemouth cichlid, even point to the exact male I want. He writes down jack dempsey. I didn't even know he did this part until I checked out and saw JD on the receipt and not the firemouth. Sorry, but at this point I wasn't about to stop the cashier in the middle of ringing up the next customer to fix a problem where someone hears firemouth and write jack dempsey.

Next time I go in I'll bring a color book, some round, square and triangle blocks and a book of ABC's, he needs that long before we start talking fish.
