I have, on occasion, bought feeders and PetSmart and I also bought a 150 gallon tank there. I guess I find this ridicule of PetSmart employees to be tiresome and irritating as well. These people have always been very pleasant to me and anyone who goes in there thinking that they will be greeted by seasoned aquariasts simply has unreasonable, if not deluded expectations. Most of the time, these are just kids. It's true, that many of them lack experience and depth of knowledge with regard to fish....but they TRY. Lay off PetSmart employees.

i agree. with how much the fish keeping hobby is growing, there is bound to be a change in events and with more and more older and more knowlegdable people that have to work there because nowadays they are out living their retirimint, it will get better. yes, most petsmarts are not good in the fish department. yes, some are actually very good. yes, mine is very good and knowledgable. yes, usually their lack of knowledge ends up in your favor. no, you have no right to pass judgement on these people and they only thing you should do is try to help them.

I'm with you rocks, you said "firemouth" and he wrote "jack dempsey" i dont see how that is your fault.

If the Petstores are that worried about selling the wrong fish for the wrong price, maybe they should at least attempt to teach the employees which fish are which.
It wouldn't take that long and it wouldnt be that expensive, just like 2 three hour classes and they should know what fish is which.

Just my 2 Cents.

When you were brand new to the hobby, you're saying you could have memorized Petsmart's entire fish stock in 2-3 hours? That's pretty good.

no, my bad, i meant 2 3hour classes. so a total of 6 hours. our petco dont have that many fish and all of the sticker things on the fish tanks with the prices, have pictures of the fish.

There stock isn't that big.
There are working with living creatures.
These stores need to take responsiblilty for their staff and train them with at least the basic's.

I don't expect to go into a Petsmart or the like and find an expert in every store, although I do expect that from an LFS being that they are supposed to be specaility stores - and we all know how that goes. I use to work for Walmart part time building bikes. I had to sit through HOURS of computer based training, they have their own little Walmart...college...in the back of each store.

I never get tired of stupid employee/customer stories :D

I kinda have to straddle both sides on this one. On one hand i see your point of view in that this particular petsmart store hasn't adequately trained its employee or at least put him with someone with more experience (since last i checked that's how we train people, so i do find this annoying), but also i kinda found disturbing that you attacked this kid's vision esp on the whole gold vs. green severum. Yes he made a mistake with the JD and firemouth, that may have been out of plain nervousness, but did it ever occur to you that he could've been color blind? gold vs green it might've been all the same to him. Who knows, it may have just been out of inexperience and nerves, but do give him the benefit of a doubt. Afterall, it benefitted you in the end. Don't forget that you did happen to visit a petsmart.

I frequent petsmart all the time and when i do talk to their employees i make sure to let them know, i know my material and fish. I talk to them and share info if they don't know it yet because employees tend to care for all the creatures in general and there is plenty of room to make mistakes when you're dealing with 100+ species of fish, birds, reptiles and mammals.

The only way we can really progress in this hobby is by sharing info. If we keep it from other people, mistakes, mistreatments, and improper habits will just perpetuate itself from one so called hobbyist to the next. Just think of it when you visit another LFS or big chain store like petsmart. Good luck.

I wasn't trying to bash the OP, it's the "laughing at stupidity" title that I hate..........So many folks get so worked up if someone doesn't know every thing about their favorite fish and they talk about how stupid the LFS employee is, and then they come home and read MFK for hours on end, something that the LFS employee most likely doesn't do.........so, use all the MFK knowlegde for good, and don't bash someone who doesn't know as much as you...........the hobby will benefit, the fish will be healthy at pet stores, and we'll all have kick ass tanks!
