Lava rock

I have big lava rocks in my tank and it looks great, in fact you can see a lava rock in my avatar. It should be safe as long as you clean in and soak it for a while before putting it into your aquarium. The only thing I would say worries me about the larger pieces of lava rock is the digging that cichlids can do under it. I recently took out some of the larger pieces of lava rock because I have a female festae that loves to dig right now and I'm worried that it'll crack my tank if she shifts it the wrong way. If you have a glass tank I would advise putting egg crate divider/light diffuser under your gravel and set the lava rock on the top of this and add gravel around it. Also, make sure the lava rock isn't too close to the sides of your aquarium in case of them shifting due to a digging cichlid.

It really gives it a natural look that I like....Now if I could just hold off on buying fish for a couple seconds (LOL) maybe I can add some driftwood or plants. If you do put some lava rock, it would be cool to see some pics of your tank.

lava rock makes great biomedia aswell, instead of spending a truck load of money on cereamic ring ect etc go to canadian tire or whatever your american equivilant is and go to the grill section they sell 7lb bags for like 3 $ perfect for biomedia,
the stuff i buy is from the great grill company, wash and clean as you would any new decor..

I've used lava rock with my cichlids for years, they love all the caves and hiding spots that are created by stacking up unusual shaped pieces. I agree that eggcrate is a must though, and don't just set the rocks on the substrate but make sure they are fully seated on the bottom so they don't shift with digging.

Would you suggest I put the lava rock 1st and then put the gravel so the gravel is more on top of the rock anchoring it to the bottom?

i dont like it cause it is sharp. and if the fish bang into it and can cut them up pretty good.my cichlids like to rub on the sand and my holey rock and so i cant put anything sharp in.
