Lava rock

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So I went to my lfs and the dude said its not good because it will cause a lot of algae so I'm not going to get it I don't want a bunch of algae all over the place.

What are some other rocks you guys recommend that have nice color but won't cause so much algae?

It doesnt cause any more algae than any other rock it just have more places to anchor to because it is porous I use lava rocks in my tanks and it doesn't affect algae grows but some can be sharp so run your hands around it and check for sharp edges before you use it.

I set my first layer of rocks right on the
Eggcrate then put sand down to anchor them in, and lava rocks don't cause algae poor husbandry does

worst advice they are fish not rocket scientist and like i said imo the thread is not to argue just give your own opinion and leave it at that
 
In summary to the original poster of this thread lava rock is good, both as far as decorative, and as a bio media, its super porous and there are millions of places for bacteria to grow.
I have it in every single tank on one capacity or another and have never .... ever had an issue, others may have had a different exp but mine have all been good.
I apologize for "derailing" this thread but I call em like i see em,

Thanks yea the lfs guy was a complete dumb ass I was checking out the managuense's yesterday and today I went back to get some rock for the tank and was going to check them out more and he says "can I help you?" and I said "im going to go check out The managuenses" and he says "the what?" I said "the jaguar cichlids" he then says "we don't have any" I said "yea you do I just saw them yesterday" he says "oh well, I guess we do" then I go to where they were and there's like 6 of them
