Are you suggesting that I ridicule, insult or demean members?????????
I think not and thanks for your particularly sharp and thoughtless post here since you decide to pick on my thread (and myself) instead of taking others to task. If you'd just take this amount of time to guide the youngsters here, this could be a different site.

What this directed towards me?

Nope wasn't directed towards you at all. And I agreed with your post. PM sent.

Nope. Those were not your words.

That individual you speak of would probably be a moderator here if he chose his words with a little more tact. He chooses not to. Also, I was the first mod to notice that thread, and the first thing I noticed that stood out to me, was that BS comment. So it isn't that we support, or allow things like that to go unchecked. We don't have the manpower to police every thread, and we count on members to educate other members as well. That doesn't include flaming a kid with a tank full of sunfish. I welcome your knowledge of natives and the laws which are far greater than mine. That also goes for Polypterus and Drewish too. Try and be civil. No one has ever learned a thing from someone they couldn't respect, and I have never respected anyone who talked down to me.

I'm not saying you're a bad mod. By golly for some reason you don't even moderate this forum but that's beside the point. I see your point and I can only ask....which occurred first, the chicken or the egg? I swear Poly will be a grade "A" student if membership follows typical ethics. If good ethics abound, he's quite the personable chap.

If this place gets a handle on the ethics I'll bet Poly will promise to behave.

I'll tell you what......I've been civil here. I'll volunteer to mod this forum and the first time poly steps out of line, I'll smash him so fast you're head will spin (I've secretly been wanting to do this for some time:D).

BTW: It wasn't the tank full of sunfish that was the issue with me, it was the method of capture.

I agree that people should take more notice of the law especially when it comes to taking animals out of the wild. If i saw someone breaking the law when it comes to stuff like this, i would definately tell them straight what i think they should do.

What saddens me a lot though when it comes to people taking wild fish and puting them in aquariums, it seems that half the time here people put such wild fish in tanks too small for them, or in uncycled tanks, and a lot of the time they don't even seem to know what sort of wild fish they have (there are countless fish ID threads in this section alone to prove that). I have seen some terrible advice here, like people just saying you should go down to your local pond/lake/river etc and just keep what you catch and thats it.

I do believe in constructive critism, but it really does bug me sometimes how unbelievibly irresponsable and ignorant people can be here when it comes to taking fish from the wild.
And i feel a lot of people just do it because they are taking fish and not other animals from the wild- most people would never treat the topic of taking birds or native mammals from the wild as a light issue, but when it comes to fish, people just seem to go down to their local lake or river and catch a load of fish and stick them in a tank back at home (where the fish will probably die before its time in the tank) and not think twice about the whole thing, because its a fish.

I just feel people should do more here to raise the issues concerning taking fish from the wild. I think if the more knowledgable members here put their knowledge together, making something like a new sticky/pinned topic in this section on the whole thing could go a long way maybe in making people think more about the subject of taking fish from the wild and the laws and moral questions concerning it etc?

I would like to point out a closed thread, one that was closed because of ignorance before it just became a flame fest.
The OP went netting and was chastised for taking home "game fish", this is where the ignorance starts... These type of posters are of the species 'catfish' (all mouth and no brains). Turns out the OP was within his rights and knew what he was doing and his own state laws.

I was just about to mention something similar to that, up here, panfish are open ALL year, ALL sizes, and with ANY *LEGAL* method of collection, which would include, lines and nets, and those baited traps. They are a bait and a food fish here.

Every state has different laws, so you really shouldn't be fussing about gamefish if you don't live in that same state, and haven't read the DNR's rules.

BUT--
I think if you post ANYTHING about collecting a species from the wild for aquaria use, you should be REQUIRED to post your local DNR's website with fishing rules and regulations to prove that your collecting is legal.

I can deal with that...but I know some that won't reference that before typing :D.

Dr Joe

You’re very incorrect on many assumptions. According to Massachusetts law Bluegill or any sunfish other than Pumpkinseed can not be taken in any manner but Hook and line. (321 CMR 4.01(4)(f)

Bluegill or any other sunfish except for Pumpkinseed can also not be transported alive or kept without the proper permits. (321 CMR 4.09, 321 CMR 4.01(8)(a)1. through 15 and 321 CMR 2.15 (6)(d) )

Now can you prove that the fish pictured and captured where actually Pumpkinseed and does it appear as though they are being used for bait and not for culture or maintenance as defined by 321 CMR 4.09 ?? The method of capture transport and possession in this case is Illegal according to Massachusetts law.

completely ignorant. youre never gonna stop what people do just get over it. i have some pumkinseeds would you like to call the police? its not a big deal its not like they are being takin out of there natural habitat to be eaten, killed, and destroyed. there are plenty out there. the intent of having them...curiousity, the want to learn, view, observe, not to hurt them or the environtment. its not some fish genocide.
