Leaf Fish

I've had mine about 4 months ad they've gone from an inch to a little over three inches. They're in a 40breeder with my bichir growouts They eat cut up Hikari massivore, tilapia, bloodworms, and occasionally ghost shrimp and guppies. I do a 50% water change once a week

I have tried pellets and they dont eat them..the bloodworms are the same it just falls to the bottom of the tank and it sits there...but as soon as i put fry a white cloud or a shrimp in my leaf fish are instantly in predator mode and its gone within a min. ...i did some research and it said that they are mostly common in stagnet water and ponds and that a 20% water change is needed a month....BUT idk how true that is...im no expert..


Also on another note if the water slowly evaporates out of my tank over a period of time and i add new water to fill it up isn't that almost like doing a water change.?? jw
 
No adding water to fill it up is not doing a water change. I'd recommend minimum 25% weekly water changes on any tank. Even if your nitrates don't get high there are minerals in the water that get depleted and should be replenished.

I think if you bump up your water changes and vary their diet a bit more (I know they're not accepting most things right now, you just need to keep trying and hopefully they'll come around) then you'll hopefully see better growth :)

Increasing the water changes definitely help. Leafs are hard to get off of live food. May have to starve them a bit. Likely were fed live food prior to u buying them.

I bought one from a petsmart years ago and later found out it is really a spotted climbing perch, Ctenopoma acutirostre, which luckily he was already in the correct conditions for him so it wasn't a big deal.

So I don't know if that is the same guy you have but mine is still doing great about 4 years later! I guess I got lucky that he has always eaten blood worms but I do put feeders in there for him as well. I'd say it took mine well over a year to get full grown but he has been a great addition to my fresh water tank!

He is very hardy and has been through moving houses 3 times, including from Texas to Ohio (that was a long drive for the little guy!)

Spotted climbing perch is the same fish as african leaf fish. Just a different name for it, they have the same scientific name
