Leaving My Tank...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
being a former college student with a 75g im gonna tell you to fill er up with plants and fish... transport really isnt that tough especially with only an hour 15 minute drive.

for thanksgiving... im guessing its like 4 days off... id jsut get a light timer an feed before you leave. most if not all fish will be fine for 4 days. make sure to keep your filter running. if u wanna be extra careful id suggest a powerhead for back up jsut incase power goes on and the filters fail to start back up just ot keep the water agitated.

for christmas... get like 3 or 4 5 gallon buckets with lids at home depot. when u go home for break just fill up 15-20 gallons of clean tank water then gravel vac the rest. put the fish in the buckets and drive home. i transported a 12" pike cichlid 4 hours plus all the time to carry a 75g up 4 flights of stairs. make sure to keep your filter media wet. a 29 isnt that big an easily fits in the backseat of most cars. and if ur worried about a stand im sure u got something at home that can temporaily hold the 29 til you go back.

granted your tank is cycled... id say get some fish an pass on the snails unless you were planning to have them anyways.

and in addition to my other post. buckle that 29 in when u tank it home and make sure the buckets of water are secure and wont tip over

that sounds great. my tank probably wouldnt be cycled by then b/c i will get it on the 29th of this month and start setting it up. I was planing on cycling it by putting the plants/snails in it (will that work)? and the thanksgiving break i will be gone 9 days (friday-sat-sun-mon-tues...sun)

to get the tank cycled your gonna need an ammonia source... not an expert on this part but the plants wont produce ammonia i think and youd have the make sure to feed the snails plenty to make sure that the nitrifying bacterial is great enough to support fish. another thing to consider is that once you leave you wont be adding anymore food/ammonia so there might be a die off in your beneficial bacteria. i suppose a solution to that could be to intentianally spiek it before you go but that could kill your snail i think.

possibly invest in a cheaper hardy fish and a automatic fish feeder for thanksgiving

Thanks for all the advice! Any suggestions on fish to use?

If you start the tank out with some shrimp and snails, plant heavily, and only add a few fish at a time, while monitoring ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates, with frequent water changes, cycling shouldnt be necessary, as the plants will absorb the extra nutrients as the beneficial bacteria build up

ok, thanks :)

Feeder goldfish they get they make it thru the cycle pretty good and all that waste they create is going to make ammonia.Make sure to get a auto feeder.
