you can add regular old ammonia to the tank just remember its measured in ppm so u dont need alot. to lazy to do calculations to figure out what you should add but point is a drop or 2 is most likely sufficient. danios are pretty hardy as well and are cheap if u wanna avoid the feeder goldfish
do you know about some dalmatian mollies? my dad has about 5 or so fry and 5 guppies that are fry that he is giving me. would they be good to cycle once they get bigger? they are like a week or so old and will be like 3 or 4 weeks when i have the tank set up
those could work. mollies and guppies are both fairly hardy fish. what are your plans for adding fish after the break? also 10 fish right away could be alittle much and cause to big of spike, but then again they will be small.
my advice would be how important are the fish to you. if ur wanna keep them and keep all of them alive dont add them all at once. key is to kinda get the beneficial bacteria started and then add fish at a rate which the beneficial bacteria can multiply at to keep up.
one way to bypass all this tho... id ur getting the fish from your dad. see he can give you some filter media from his tank. then it will already have beneficial bacteria and ur pretty much ready to go from day one

These fish are not that important to me...
I am still debating on the fish i want. I really like the german rams (maybe 2) and an amazon leaf fish (or two) and a zebra pleco and i would kind of like some type of eel looking loach. That would be my first choice but the second one would be a dwarf puffer tank...
How exactly would i get the filter media from him and introduce the bacteria? do i put it in my filter even if they will not be the same size? and i could put fish in that day??
i mean what u need is something from his tank that already has beneficial bacteria on it already. some of my HOB filters i use filter floss so if i wanted to i can just rip off some and it will have some beneficial bacteria on it. i just set up a 20 and didnt wanna wait for it to cycle so i cut a piece off my aquaclear filter media and stuck it in the back of my whisper 10. this doesnt give it all the benficial bacteria it needs but it really jump starts the process
what kind of filters is he running on his tanks. one option is also put rocks from his tank in a mess bag an put in your filter for a week or 2. or tell him to get some filter floss and put in his filter... and then take it when u start your tank up http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=4235
i think its just one that has a carbon filter... nothin fancy
EDIT: i just found out that the zebra pleco's cost $150++ so that is out of the question for my tank for a while lol
i do like the african butterfly fishes.
