OK I was all in for $1000AUD

Here's why:

T5's were gonna cost me $660AUD and were gonna draw minimum of 110W
Plus globes every year $80.

what do you mean by globes? watts?

Yep I used T5 HighOutput as my other option for the comparison.
So gotta replace tubes every year if you have them on for 10 hours a day or more. And they use more power.
Remember these are bright as, if you look at the lit optic at full power you'll be seeing spots for a while!!

Gentlemen (and ladies?) I thought I would update you on my LED lighting situation.

Had one led burn out because the heat sink epoxy gave in and the led came away from the heatsink and cooked itself!

I removed all the optics one night and was surprised to see that it lit the tank better and more evenly!! No loss through the concentrator/lens.

Also I have added mirrors to the entire middle of the frame.
This really increased the diffusion of the light.

Also, the setup runs at 12.6v and 1.8 Amps so only using 23W to light the tank. Simply amazing efficiency on level 3 of 8 and keeps the leds nice and cool too.

Will post updated pic asap.

I like this setup , very clean, question where did you get that (what looks like) prefabricated channel that the leds are glued in? also do you plan on putting any blues in to bring out the fish's colors ? I think it would be a nice addition

love the lighting.... is that a DYI backround as well ? if so you are sure a handyman

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Thanks for your question nyinfamous2k2.
I popped in to a local ballustrading and aluminium window frame supplier and they had heaps to choose from. Then powder coated (cost $50, should have just spraypainted it for $10!!). Then cut and bolet together with stainless parts from hardware store.
Daylight or close to it was my target for colour temp, haven't added any blues yet but have thought about it.

Have you all heard of QEGlobal? Apparently just order a power pack and 5mtrs of the Brite Daylight adhesive ribbon and you are sorted for a 6ft long tank.....

I'll have to work on some shots!!

If I was building one this year for a BIG tank I would go Cree XM leds when they come out soon, 750 lumens at 2A at 110lumen/watt efficiency per chip, wow!!
