LED's and Glossostigma.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Man, what an impressive setup! I'll be honest though, that's all above my head and I had no idea what you guys were talking about. I'd love to dive into this one day. With enough research, I'm sure I can build one. What's the typical cost of building something like this?

Also, can you recommend any good sites that show a walkthrough of the steps involved, the parts needed, and what each part does? thanks!

Seriously - anyone that can hold a soldering iron can do what I have done! I only started to research DIY LED's earlier this year. I had some formal training in electronics design (14 years ago, LOL) and have worked as a professional Automotive tech for 20 years. I am an avid DIYer when it comes to most things in life,as I can't see paying anyone to provide a service or product until I've tried my hand at it first. This project was my very first attempt w/ DIY LED's, and being as cheap as I am, I built nearly everything from scratch.

here's a list of some of the vendors that I used.

Cree LED's LedRise - Led, Leds, High power leds

OnSemi CAT4101 LED driver Ic's LED Drivers Digi-Key

24 volt power supplies 24VDC 6.5A 150W POWER SUPPLY AllElectronics.com

ARDUINO Microcontroller Arduino Robotics

LED Optics and complete DIY LED kits Rapid LED Home Page

If anyone wants to DIY their own system easily without the steep learning curve, check out the Rapid Led site. They literally have everything you'll need.

Anyone w/ questions or needing help w/ DIY led's - Just ask me and I'll try to help.

/\ Thanks

VERY impressive. How many watts total? Probably half the wattage of a single tube the length of that tank? 10 times the light though...

I replaced 780 watts worth of power compacts ( 6x130). The Leds are running at 700ma of current, consuming 180 watts of power. I been replacing CFLs around my home with leds too, and my electric bill has dropped considerably.:)

Really want to do LED's on my 125g SW tank...but it looks like the tab would be $1500 and I cant do that right now! :D
