Sorry for the loss Vanimate, loosing a fish you care for is the worst feeling.
I have had the same problem with a american chiclid tank I had, one day i woke up and could not see a huge managuin {bad speller guys} I thought he must have been hiding and I could see not lid removed so off to work I go, I did have 26 huge americans so hiding was kinda easy. when I get home i look for him and i find him behind the tank.... i was heart broken as he was a breeding male. All I can assume is that he jumped at the edge of the glass that has lifted and let him out and then fallen to the normal position. I have no other clue but some one putting him there............ I now have 6mm acrilic lids and I silicone them on, just a small amount in the corner will do it, its easy to remove when you need to do work on the tank, and is easier to remove then beloved fish.
