Rizzy, when you don’t understand it works much better to politely ask for clarification… which I’d be happy to offer…

Hearsay is different from heresy… But I won’t get into that tangent…

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/heresy

I never said a Blue Dempsey that is sexually mature is “immune” to parasites… I very commonly say “Blue Dempseys are prone to parasitic infection until they reach sexual maturity”. If you need to, look up the word prone…
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/prone

You yourself explained “its the fishes growth and the body maturing and building the immune system that give the fish a fighting chance.” It’s not about physical size, it’s about development… maturity…

I personally mention “sexual maturity” as the changing point based on several years of raising them in my own tanks as well as being very active in “online communities” with other’s who have been keeping them. I have seen many people with Blue Dempseys over 2”, but not yet sexually mature, suffer from parasitic infections. But stories of sexually mature Blue Dempseys dying of parasitic infections are drastically less common.

I do understand that I may sound pompous sometimes. Text only communication is devoid of tones. So especially when I come behind you correcting your mistakes, I see how you can take it that way…

Personally I think you sound like a childish brat that is just crying because someone pointed out his mistakes in front of others… But I would never say such a thing unless that childish brat became antagonistic or insulting…

Good luck with your fish

The Pompous Jerk

Well, success with EBJD isn´t easy, especially if you don´t the COMPLETE homewok previously.
I bought 6 but could only keep 2 alive, most succumbed due to internal parasites, but not all.
From the 2 I was able to get grown, one went to a friends place, and the other is now 6,3 inches, was 2 inches a year ago

i still dont see where i was wrong, past two inches is past two inches, sexual matured or not. with all your "vast experience" you were still able make the mistake mistake in criticizing what i said. remember i said "past two inches", then you said "three or four inches". last i checked.... yes, three and four come after two. yes, i agree that sexually matured specimen are less likely to catch disease, but that is because they are bigger and there bodies and immune system have matured. if you think you corrected anything i said you are delusional. We're basically agreed; let's not quibble over semantics. but hands down you have the nicest Jacks i have seen so far.....jerk..(: yes the jerk comment is a joke.

But when you say they are not prone to parasitic infections after 2"... people will mistakenly believe that the fish is "safe" as soon as it breaks 2"...

Since most Blue Dempseys will not be "sexually mature" until they are closer to 4"...

Your description is inaccurate...

Since "sexually mature" is the literal line, I see no reason to word it any other way... and I see any other wording as less than accurate, and therefore in need of being corrected...

I word things in text based communication much differently than I would in verbal communication. I do this for clarity, not arrogance. Which can easily make me sound like a jerk... I also try to cram as much information as I can into my posts, so I forgo small talk which makes a post seem much more friendly.

Thanks again for the compliments on my fish :D

And my compliments to take my dry harsh comments and to be able to respond politely

No hard feelings and no harm meant...

And to offer some friendly support to the original theme of this thread... a few more pictures...

Here is one of the first baby Blues I produced

Well I didn't, the fish did, but in my tanks :P

Here is an example of how much the color can very in the same fish depending on mood/environment

Same pair in both above pics

These are both of the same fish (male) about 2 months apart...

speaking of colour, do you kow why sometimes they are pale and sometimes dark? My fish does the same thing although mostly he is darker these days than the pale when I first got him. He does tend to be slightly paler in the mornings and over time he darkens up, especially over the black markings on his head.

Great fish you have!
What is the outcome of that cross between an EBJD and a Golden JD?

The two patterns I've seen regarding color...

They are darker when they are more confident (happy), and lighter when they are more stressed (unhappy)

They are darker when housed in darker surroundings, they are lighter when housed in lighter suroundings...

I have very light tan sand in all of my tnaks, but in the above pics you can see in the tanks that are well light, wide open (very little decor) and lighter colored backgrounds, the fish are lighter... in the tanks with a darker background, slightly less lighting, more decor, they are darker...

In my opinion, one of the best ways to darken up most Cichlids, is to make sure you have a solid background on the back (sides also if practical) and ample decor.

Blue x Gold offspring have Standard Dempsey Coloration... They are theoretically Het (Heterozygous) for both Blue and Gold... Heterozygous means they do not appear Blue (or Gold) but have the "recessive gene" to have Blue (or Gold) babies... these are often referred to as "Blue Gene"

I have used a Blue x Gold offspring to produce Blue Dempseys, so this confirms they are Het for Blue... I am confident they will prove Het for Gold and will eventually veryify this (I currently have the fish to do so, just haven't put them together).
