180 gallon is a waste of time when you're talking 10" rays. You have to understand water chemistry in regards to rays before you're going to understand tank size. A 180 with 2 10 inch rays being properly fed with adequate filtration is still going to require daily WCs to keep Nitrates in check. Now use that 180 with a 180 gallon sump and maybe you can get by doing WCs every other day......

It's up to you. You can keep rays, or you can keep them properly. I gaurentee you 5 years into keeping them you will wish you kept them properly the entire time.

Even in a 300 gallon growout housing 4 Marbles that are 7-9 inches and overkill filtration I still change half the water 3-4 times a week.

Take it from someone that has rays and a rental house..... IT SUCKS. Would be so much easier to have rays in a house that you own and can modify accordingly. In my opinonn it's silly to have rays without running drip systems. It's a pain to run drips without modifying the house.

i have 3 5-7" retics in a 55gal with 750 gph and i do 75% wc every 3 days and my perams are fine...alot of times it doesn't need to be changed, but i do it anyway...alot of people say big cats are simmilar and aros...i have them aswell though i am selling my cats right now to make room for rays as i can't do a pond for both yet...i wasn't planning on getting them till i have atleast the 300gal...alot of people do have rays without drip systems it would be nice to have one, but i don't think it is an absolute thing...

i found it...it was aquascapeonline....i cut and pasted the add...

You have 7 in retics in a 55? How do thier tails look? You sure the parameters are fine? I'd think Nitrate would be rather high if you're feeding them properly. I gaurentee your parameters are a lot diffferent before and after the waterchange. Rays like consistency, hence drip is best. If you actually enjoy doing waterchanges then more power to you, but after installing a drip I personally feel like an idiot for not doing it years ago. What a waste of time.....

Like I said you can keep rays OR you can keep them properly. Just cause they breath, eat, and poop doesn't mean they are being kept properly.

Please elaborate why you think the water doesn't need to be changed after 3 days when you do it anyways.

he will prob get u leos. they wont look like that pic though...

first off i have 3 retics not 7...you missread...next the nitrates aren't remotely high as i have bio-wheels and bio-balls that handel them well...my rays are active and have food always availble to them, their tails are nice and long and fat...just cause you think it should be done one way does not make everyone else wrong...ya it my be easier for the wcs, but you done have to do it to keep the fish right...also all my tanks are stable aswell on all counts...also all my fish have above average growth rates and are very heathly...that comes from lots of good food and CLEAN water...your aren't talking to the kid next door the grabbed some rays cause he wanted to be cool....

i wont spend that much on a fish i can't see in person...the lfs i am refering to generaly has good fish that are in good condition...

7 in Retics = 7 INCH Retics. Who misread?

7 inch disk plus full tail is longer then most 55s are wide.

Did I misread the number of Silver Aros you have? I hope I did.

I don't care what you have for filtration. Nothing eats Nitrate. Nitrate is the end waste product that can only be removed through vegitation or WCs. What is your Nitrate reading? Lemme guess..... 0 right?

Once you start paying attention to the effects of rays on Nitrates you'll see what I'm talking about.

You can buck the drip systems all you want but WCs are never going to give you the consistency of a drip. There is NO happier recipe in regards to rays AND thier keepers then a drip system.... It works great for all parties involved, ray gets consistant low nitrate parameters and the keeper no longer has to waste thier life away doing WCs.

Just trying to save you some time here by letting you learn from others' mistakes.....

yes i missread your "in" i am dislecsic(spell)...i have one that is close to 7" and the other are around 5"...no you didn't missread my aro numbers...i have 8 silvers and a jar...now as for the nitrates i don't let them get high like i said...i check them every day...also i was not bucking the drip system i only said it was not a must have like you put it to be...you still have to get the crap out so it don't eliminate the wc...i understand what you are tring to do, but i don't call the good old wc a mistake...i am merly pricing a ray that i will have and will breed...that is why i posted no b.s. replys i knew that it would take away from the perpouse of the thread...as i don't need a lecture on how to keep fish...i asked about the 180gal cause i have a second offerd to me and when my tsns are picked up my retics will go in the one i have now...i was thinking of holding off on the 300gal, but i have decided that due to the growth rate of leos i will wait till i get it...or build my pond like i said before...
