Please explain...... What's rediculous? My #s or the #s involved in keeping Nitrates in check when dealing with rays? Even IF there was Nitrate in the tap water you're only going to see what? 10PPM?

IF I'm crazy you can likely color Trev crazy too, as I think we're on the same page. ;)

well that explains it both you guys live up north...it is the water up north with the problem.... :grinno:

Vamp has the worst problems, with all the breeding lately. ;)

i really don't get it though... i can take a picture of my tests, if you don't believe me... :)

ive heard of as much as 30~40 coming out of the tap, i dont have that much trouble keeping mine in check, though my rays are a bit smaller and they have very little else in the tank with them. i was going to do some explaining but i dont want to come off like an ass, so i was just trying to say that maybe you have another underlying issue because its not that hard for most of us to keep our nitrates in check

You don't have to worry about sounding like an ass..... I'm understanding. :) We're just having a discussion here.....

The most nitrates I've ever tested out of the tap was the small town I used to live in with lots of farmland nearby. It was never more then 10-15. Anyways, no there's no tapwater nitrates here.

Maybe I feed more then usual? Something about my filters? It is strange that some change 100s of gallons a day and others once a week and the parameters are the same.

all that is strange...in a 180gal i had 24"+ silver aro, an 18"-20"-22" tsn, 10" jd, 15" pacu, 15" fl gar, 2 6" oscars and a 12" ck...i feed every day to every 2 days shrimp and my nitrates never got more then 50 ppm( and it never got that high often)...i do 75% every 2-3 days and 1-2 days fasting a week...then i stepped down the feedings to every 2 days nothing changed in the water chem...

i found that bioballs filled w crud will start to produce alot of nitrates.

i think DB and I just have alot more mouths to feed. :D

im gonna get a better measurement but im guessing i feed about 3 lbs of food per day in my 450 gal. when i feed earthworms i have to throw in at least 70 at a time. im pretty sure this explains our nitrates...

How many rays do you have In your 450? I don't think me and DB are too far off ratio wise.

Vamp, I feed no where near what you feed but my tank is also half of your...lol

right now i have all 9 of my big rays in the 450. ranging from 12" to 22"

I bet I'm only 3/4 lb in the 300, 1-1.75 lb in the pond/day.

So Trev you're telling me that next go around I need to go reactor over wet/dry? I can't believe that I'm getting cruddy balls with the kind of pads I'm running.

I wanna go back to ac 110s. That was easier then the trial and error BS of DIY ray filtration.

Rays are much messier eaters then most fish, but more importantly just flat out excrete more waste (elevated ammonia output).
Rays impact the bio load lb for lb much more then normal fish.

yes that may be true...most people with big cats say the same thing though...i have an average of 20-30ppm(on wc day) in my 55gal with the 3 retics and i have an emperor 400 and a bio-system 75 on it...also you ever seen a 15" pacu eat? they get 1/16 the food in their mouths and the rest scattered to the winds...
