I don't think they'd be too concerned by substrate? I just know that the substrate colour influences the colour of the fish.

I've had mine on straight pfs its on a mix of pfs and black diamond blasting sand now. Color hasn't changed. His color is somewhat mood dependent like a lot of fish, he can be darker or lighter depending.

I'm sure it'd be just fine. Like I said not to sure substrate color has much to do with it, I know it can with certain fish. I had mine on white pfs for two years and now on a mix of pfs and bd sand. He has stayed the same color and for the most part pattern.
