the markets are so flooded with beardies in my area that people give them away for free on CL because no one will take them. every petstore in the county has hordes of berides.... theres one breeder that i know of who breeds them like mad and keeps so many together that she looses a good number of babies to canabilism. and all of her breeder adults are missing limbs and stuff... theyre as common here as free kittens now a days

i find this problem to especially bad with bearded dragons
Why do you find this a problem? As long as its not dying or manipulating the reptiles or inbreeding I don't see a problem. Most morphs are line breed for specific traits anyways so its not really harming them.

Line bred is the same thing as inbreeding, most of the animals are bred to related animals to get the desired morph. How due you think breeders get all these albinos, etc they breed related animals for many generations.

inbreeding isn't much of a problem and that is how most morphs are made as long as they are ut bred a few times I have no problem with it

theres many ways to look at this issue.

my main problem is when everything gets so cheap that everyone can own them. then you get the people who buy something with out knowing about it. or some kids parents come home with the nice little lizard for junior because it looks cool. thats the only thing i have against it.

as far as prices, they are always going up and down. it always been like that. and always will be

im not really down with inbreeding, i know its "necessary" for the morphs, but you are really really destroying the genetic variability in those animals, and loosing alleles for unknown traits that will never be able to come back.

Agreed;) I also dont like enigmas because of their possible neurological probs, unless someone finds a way to outbred thouse traits we should think twice before making a purchase of this leos

That kind of breeding is simply unecessary and should be discoraged in all means possible:(

All I gotta say is that I use to make a lot more money selling leopard geckos 10+ years ago than what I do now. You can make decent money selling them privately to individuals but to pet stores, forget it. I remember in '97 when I could get $40-$50 bucks for every High Yellow LG I sold to local pet stores. Now I'm lucky if I can get $25 bucks for each one. What really kills me is that people can just go to Petco or Petsmart and by a baby for $19 bucks when they have sales. The private breeder can't compete with the mass breeders who sell to those kind of stores.

Well it is really hard as it is to find an actual "normal" leopard gecko. The wild caught ones are hard to come by and are pretty spendy. But they do look cool. I don't see what the big deal is with breeding for profit. But it is pretty much like the fish breeding hobby the easier they are to breed the less you will make for it. Just ask Seth he breeds his leos but I don't think he makes anything to impressive off of them.

My oldest male leopard gecko is an F1 generation. Both it's parents were wild caught. :naughty:
