This one's a little more recent from when his tank used to be next to our couch. Like I said he'd sit in his little cave staring at me.

That is a textbook Desmotes. GORGEOUS!!!!

Awesome! :D

How common are desmotes? I couldn't really find any info on them.

Now I'll have to go get a fasciatus too since that's what we meant to buy in the first place.

Now get this.... you won't be finding a fasciatus... but rather, an AFFINIS. True fasciatus are... let's just say I've never heard of them being offered. All the ones at stores are being passed off as fasciatus, but are in fact affinis.
L. desmotes seems to be popping up more regularly in these affinis shipments. In a tank of them, you'll often see one desmotes (Well, not often, but once in a while) I have seen three others, since I found mine, and others on here, including yourself, have come forward with theirs.

So, I'd say desmotes is on the rise. Nice! Now go get an affinis!

Interesting! I guess I'll have to keep a really good eye on what's actually in the tank, maybe I'll pick up some oddball or something.

I guess it's pretty common to get mixed fish in a lot of the Anostimidae shipments. We have an Anostomus ternetzi that was sold to us as an A. anostomus and have yet to find another ternetzi ANYWHERE. They don't have the pretty red fins but they're not as shy. He doesn't startle easily and is always coming to the top for food.

In my area, we often get tanks of both L. affinis and L. fasciatus and they are labled as such.

from what I can tell, the do seem easy to tell apart as juveniles when side by side.

The fasciatus seem to have thicker bands than the affinis and the orange throat. They do not seem to have the lighter bands that the desmotes have.
