I breifly had a RTC but it went into my 120gal. tank with my shovelnose. It was six inches and the SN was ten inches. Figured close enough in size! Came home week later with the RTC stuck in the mouth of the SN. Had to use pliers to separate. The RTC lived for another week but never recovered. The SN grew too big for the tank and had to be moved outside into heated pond. Lived to three feet long before dying durring cold snap when heater crashed.

I'm sure it looked huge in that little 100 gallon tank... but the fact of the matter is that you would have needed a shoe horn to get it out of there...sherbear;1552900; said:

I know I stupidly kept a 26" rtc in a 125 gal when I started out. I knew in my heart it was wrong. He ended up dying one night after vommiting after I overfed him. I was really stupid back then. I haven't seen a tank yet that I think is too big. That's why I am building the 15' x 10' x 3.5'.......
i had the rtc 15 years ago when we were just starting out with fish and yes he did outgrow the tank big time,that's why i found some where else for him,we couldn't afford a bigger tank then.MAN, people get ugly on here and attack!so much for sharing and being called a LIAR! 
Everyone on this site has at one time or another put fish in containers/tanks that were too small for the fish and probably lost the fish.
I know I have....................
Some of us admit we have.
Others don't.
I feel we should just learn from it and with the experience either put the fish in an appropriate size tank or put appropriate size fish in the tank we have.

No intention of calling you a liar or "attacking" just saying that a 36" (since your orginal mark was cut back from 42") just seems alittle over sized for a 100 gallon tank and I don't beleive that your memory is as clear as you think it is... When looking at the fish in the tank you could definetly beleive it was much bigger than it really was. I would beleive that you would have been able to keep it in the 100 without killing it uptill around 30".. Although I have seen large fish in small tanks.. but that would be the biggest if it really was that big

We have a nitrate probelm...can anyone help? Our tank is 7ft by 2.5ft by 2ft and we have 3 filters which will turn over 900 ltrs. we have done 3 tank changes in the last 3 days and cleaned the filters out, we have only had our two red tailed catfishes in for 2 weeks and nitrate is too high. We have coral sand on the base about 5mm deep. Does anyone know how we can bring the nitrate level down?
Also one of our catfish has damaged its peptoral fin whereby the end part of the bone has separated from the fin by approx 2mm, we have put in antibacterial lotion to keep fungus at bay - will this heal?

hi im wondering about the diet and color thing cause i feed my rtc krill and shrimp pellets and his water is pristine but his color is yellow he has hiding places
