If you have another tank available, why not take out a couple of the females and see how he does?
My wife converted my second tank to a African Cichlid tank so I can't transfer them to it. If I have enough time before the next killing, I will set up one of the smaller tanks in my garage until I can sort things out. A friend of mine gave me a drilled 75 with stand for free. I wanted to take the time to stain the stand before stocking it but this nut may not give me the chance. Bad thing is no matter how crazy he is, i still love the male Festae. I don't want to part with him...or the others.

They could go on like that for a while before they decide it's time. I think everything else in that tank is going to die if you don't get them out.

Hi just a quick thought for you.

You do know why it has the word TERROR as it's common name?

If you did not now you do!!!!!

Yes, I fully understand that. I purchased these fish knowing the many reasons for their namesake. I'm not angry with the fish for doing what they do. But at the same time I have kept them this long based on the advice of the helpful people on this site. I figured I would not break from what has worked so far. I'm just not certain of what is going on with them. If the male is testing the females for potential mates would removing them calm him down? If I reintroduced each female behind a divider until he made his choice, would that be better?

I really did not get the chance to observe the relationship between male and female as my male jumped the tank and I have a female left, I do know that she can certainly hold her own in my tank.

Will be interested to see how your thread goes

Hey, I really appreciate your help anyway as well as everyone else. I'm sorry your male bailed on you. Everything is peaceful at the moment. The male is still displaying his colors but he's not on a rampage. He postures and nips a little but the killing has stopped...I think. He's sticking close to his favorite girl and her piece of tile. The others are keeping their distance.

Unfortunitely it's a chance we take when keeping Festae and other Ca's for that matter. My pair have a great bond, were togather over 2 yrs. before my male almost killed the female. Never would have thought it.Luckly she heal fine with no permament damage but now I have to keep a close watch and know when to put the divider up.

That a terror for you he's getting a peacking order arranged letting everyone know whos the boss... What size is your tank?

They are in a 120 now. Once a pair has formed I will remove everything else. They are still small so I think a 120 will be fine for a while until I have to upgrade. It's still peaceful. There has been only a few instances of aggression, nothing like the rampage before. I think he took out who he wanted to get rid of. His colors are still jacked up so this could all be the calm before the next storm.

Welcome to the world of festae. I started off with 10 and had them in a 20g tank for growout and then they went into a 55g once they put on some size. Well that was all fine and dandy, and then I put them into a 1200 gallon pond and a pair formed and killed every other festae in the pond! They spawned and got along beautifully for three months in a 120g tank, but when I went home for Christmas for a week the male killed the female.
