Here's my 14" Hoplias Malabaricus Var.

I just got this Red from my lfs. He's about 4" and closely resembles a Golden Trahina (sp?). The first night in my tank, he ate my 2½" blueberry oscar. The next morning, either the other fish ousted him, or he jumped because I found him on the floor next to my end table, all dried and hairy (probably from the cat playing with him all night). I put him in the coffee table tank and he's been doing fine since. :headbang2: :woot:

Fierce predator. Loves shrimp. I've only had him for a week. Haven't gotten any feeders for him yet, but I'm sure I'll have feeding pics/video soon enough. :grinno:

Has anyone had a non-cichlid predator ousted from a cichlid tank before?

Jimtan75, I like the Hoplias Malabaricus Var.

Got myself a Golden Trahina, Hoploerythrinus unitaeniatus a week ago.

I have been trying to get some photos since this thread started but he/she is the most nervous fish I have ever owned. Bolts for cover every time I walk in the room. Will only eat earthworms at the moment, won't touch shrimp or fish, live or otherwise and then only when its pitch black. Any suggestions to increase confidence would be greatly appreciated.

It’s a really great looking fish, currently 4", haven't seen any pics on the web that do it any justice.

PS. I saw a Rainbow Wolf eating flake on the weekend.

wow jelly, sounds weird - I thought any wolf would savage an aptly sized feeder fish.

I had success with my hoplias by using a blue moon light, they don't seem to like light very much.

Whereabouts in the UK are you? You seem to get some good fish.

btw - is it not "trahira"? :)

Probably, didn't look right when I typed it.

I will try the blue light.

I keep an eye on tropicalfishfinder.co.uk, nearly all my fish come from Wildwoods in Enfield, London. They usually have a good Oddball selection, At the moment they have a Couple of SH's some Vampire tetra's, Freshwater Barracudas, leaf fish, Normal wolves, a bunch of small red Hifin wolves, Golden trahira and a hole bunch of other stuff. Been going there since I was young. Great store.

Every fish in my sig has come from there.

oh I see, yeah I'm not surprised, wildwoods have the best overall selection of fish. I got my wolf from there. A lot of their stuff is very overpriced though, and it shouldn't be seeing as they get most of their stuff direct, not though wholesalers.
