depends on the species. they can get from 8" to 3' depending on the species

a rainbow wolf (Erythrinus erythrinus) should be fine in a 55g. they get to be about 8"

a juvenile for awhile the H. mala will get to be about 2' when adult. you will need a much larger tank.
