LFS awkward moment

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ahahaha my goodness. I hate LFS... well most of them haha. You would think they would hire individuals who know something about fish.

you did the right thing by walking out the door. there is no point in arguing about it and started up a big debate. smart move.

My closest LFS (Jack's Aquarium on Smithville RD in Dayton) kind of let me down tonight. I stopped there tonight after work to see if any rare new cichlids came in. Didn't see any. Then I saw in one of their 55 gallon cichlid tanks they had a pretty large green sunfish. I wasn't used to seeing that fish for sale at a fish store, so I looked for a price. Didn't see one for "green sunfish." Then one of the employees who likes to give me advice on my cichlids walked by. So I ponted to the green sunfish and asked him, "So, you have a green sunfish there?" He said no, that's a wolf cichlid, a dovii. They had a price tag for that, there were no doviis in there.

I said "Allllllrighty then", and strolled out the door right then. Didn't feel like telling him how wrong he was, you can not confuse these two fish. It was just a letdown to me to see how ignorant people selling the fish can be, and try to pawn themselves off as experts. God help you if you try to tell them their wrong. :screwy: Green sunfish confused with dovii??? Come on now fish store dude.

I recommend you go to the Jacks in Easton. The staff there is great and very knowledgeable and they have a better selection than both the other Jack's I have been to (Mill Run and Belfountaine)

Hey everybody I just picked up a sweet P. dovii at an LFS in OH. Check it out

Jacks is the best store here in columbus but i only go there to deal with them on the side!

How do you do that and what do you get. Do you just ask request special fish or talk down prices? Or do you know someone that works there?

Cool, what Jack's do you go to, maybe you can hook me up sometime with some stuff:naughty:

Couldn't agree more.

It's all about service and a willingness to learn.

Anyone remember Big Don's Pet Hut (Dayton, OH LFS circa 1988-92)? Now THAT was a store...

maybe we could save the LFS by providing knowledgeable customer service. You can't get that at the big box or the website. In other markets where wal-mart, HD, and target are snuffing out mom and pop, the few mom and pops that survive do so by offering something the corporations can't -friendly knowledgeable personalized service.

When I first got into the hobby I used to go to the LFS and ask tons of questions. Now when I need to buy something, I tend to go back to those same stores (well when geography allows). The ones that gave me bad info, or acted like asshats get the cold shoulder.

So the fish you are posting about is a green sunfish? Are green sunfish SA/CA cichlids? Have you posted in the right sub form?

Two of the above questions have the answer "No" to them. I always have to laugh at people who come to this forum and proclaim how much smarter they are then the folks at the LFS :screwy: Why not share your knowledge with others?

I never said I was smarter than the guy at the LFS . I just don't like when people talk out of their back ends that something is an unquestionable fact when it isn't. As far as posting in this sub forum, the green sunfish was confused with a dovii, a fish which people on this sub forum are familiar with. I was thinking more of what a dovii looks like, going from that angle. I also visit this forum so much more often, so I think people know me more here. I thought there was going to be a chance that someone would get anal about where this was posted, and you didn't let me down, well done.:)

When my enlistment in the navy was done in 1992, I moved to Dayton, and worked at that exact LFS for about a year before getting a job at the USPS. In my time working at the LFS I never told a customer something I didn't know for sure. I would tell them if I wasn't sure, and try to find the right answer.
