So i had the owner of a LFS shop tell me they feed their 24" RTC live mice. Has anyone heard of this? This can't be good?

I have heard of it also in reading around here but I do not suggest it. There are plenty of other much healthier options for the Catfish. Mine enjoys a varied diet of pellets, krill, shrimp, carnivore delight, chopped fish, worms etc...

I've heard of this before and would strongly advise against it, the reality of it is that RTC like many other fish have digestive systems that are unable to break down mammalian proteins, they are simply not designed to eat these types of food. the fish may be able to handle it for a while but it isn't good long term, and will pollute the tank water in no time.

Occasional treat is fine but not as an exclusive diet. Most fish in the wild actually take mammalian protein but only once in awhile, that is if shrews and mice fall to the water and thus are caught by the predatory fish. Please remember that foods in the wild are scarce compared to the captivity where we even end up giving them foods too generously because we find it amusing to watch how they eat. Feed in moderation. That is the key.

Exactly. Agreed on all counts.

Not disturbing at all... Foolish if it's a staple... otherwise What do you think happens when these guys are in the wild and see a small mouse swimming in the water??

It's a RARE Treat... the real problem isn't the digestion of these guys... it's the chance that That mouse could do some damage to your Fish ... I havn't met a mouse yet that just laid there while being eatten... Which is the personal reason why none of mine will ever get one. It's the risk that they take in the wild we have other options for them which are MUCH safer

Its unessisary and cruel.

I dont really have a problem with feeder fish but live animals is a no, no.

Bruce, feeders also are live animals:)

the point is that fish cannot cope with mammalian protein as a staple, frequent, diet....
