LFS feeding RTC mice

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well I was going to offer my thoughts but Lupester kinda summed up everything I wanted to say, as usual beating me to the point. Ugh, now what am I to do?

I will say though that I did offer my LMB and bullheads live field mice, moles, shrews whenever I caught them. I would say about once every two weeks they got a rodent each. Usually did a water change soon after for obvious reasons.

Occasional treat is fine but not as an exclusive diet. Most fish in the wild actually take mammalian protein but only once in awhile, that is if shrews and mice fall to the water and thus are caught by the predatory fish. Please remember that foods in the wild are scarce compared to the captivity where we even end up giving them foods too generously because we find it amusing to watch how they eat. Feed in moderation. That is the key.
nicely put lup, that is the key to healthy fish.i hear ppl say they beg so i give them food, pffft, not a very good excusse as far as i'm concerned.

is that all the opinions?

As a treat we'll you can get away with it but Definatly not as a staple

What about rodent teeth?

I seen and heard horor stories about snakeowners feeding their snakes and leaving. Only to return to find a mouse or rat munching on the snake. Might be different story in the water, but I won't risk it.

It's not really the protien that you have to worry about. It's the skeleton and fur. Their digestive systems cannot handle that any better than it can massive amounts of kerotin. Feed large whole fish(12"+) to your monster and about 50% of the time they will puke the bones back up. I'd have to say the same would be true about mammals and birds. When I use to feed large whole fish to my big boy I didn't realized this, but I found several that he'd puked back up just the skeletons, and when I cleaned his tank when moving I found thousands of bones in his gravel.
