I’m lucky to have some good lfs around me and also lucky to be able to order fish for myself through my job (but I only do it rarely because how well the come in straight from a wholesaler can vary wildly and I’m not usually getting cheap fish either) but I have bought some harder to find snails/shrimp/nano fish online as well, but I try and buy from local hobbyists when possible or order plants from hobbyists via internet connections. I’ll sometimes buy supplies at a store if it’s cheaper than online but sometimes it’s nust significantly cheaper online (and I also prefer to buy in bulk which stores don’t always have large containers of chemicals/filteration material/foods/etc.)
I will say though that if you’re in an area that doesn’t have LFS that stock what interest you than you’re going to be willing to pay the price for shipping from online vendors, and some LFS definitely don’t know what fish they have or have poor quality fish due to lack of proper care. However I’m sure there are online sellers with those problems as well, but I think it’s easier to avoid due to increased competition between online vendors. I don’t think most LFS are going to ever be able to compete in the same way with online retailers, so what they have to do in order to survive is have knowledgeable staff and take good care of their livestock. If you’re LFS is just filled with kids who are only working there to grab a fish and charge you for it than it’s probably not going to do to well in the age of the internet.
