lfs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Idiots at lfs's got me into monster fish in the first place. About 15 years ago, I bought these really cool fish with red bellies at my lfs. I was told they "could" need "up to" 75g. I had a 90, so I thought it was great for them. My cool fish turned out to be Pacu. I got all the info my lfs had on them, but it wasn't enough, clearly. Lesson learned. A few years later, I bought my first clown knife. He was sold to me by the geniuses at a large chain pet store as a tropical, semi-aggressive fish, that would be peaceful with most other things. Mmmhmmm. Imagine how that worked out.
I learned to never trust my lfs, and do my homework ahead of time. Now, though, life is easier because I have a smart phone. I don't ask employees anymore, I just start searching Google when I don't know something and I'm at a lfs.

We have okay lfs. If you go at the right time, there are a few people who know what's going on. But my favorite lfs is about 3 hours away. I guess it's not really all that local is it...

Yeah, a lot of LFS staff really don't have the slightest clue.. IME, very few have knowledgable staff. I once bought a 5" inch midas cichlid clearly knowing that it was a midas cichlid. But the person that net the fish for me swore it was a black belt cichlid. And said the thing would grow up to be about 2 feet long, Lol.. Sad to say, this was suppose to be one of the top 3 LFS store here in my area too.. FAIL..

When i first got into the fish hobby i asked my lfs what was the difference between the 2 guppies they had .... Fancy Guppies & Feeder Guppies, the lady told me the feeders would eat the leftover food that my other fish missed !

A person at a lfs store told me an angelfish would be fine with a feeder guppy in a 1 gallon hex tank. Then I asked my parents and they said it would be fine. I was five years old so I believed anything I heard. Well to sum up what happened is my guppy got eaten and not JUST eaten. The angelfish broke its back in half sucked it in its mouth, shredded its skin and ripped his face of his body then swallowed him whole and spit out the bones. Guess what fish got returned the next day. That guppy was practically my family. It was one of my 40 fry in a bowl that I had. I was so pissed.

Great stories. Yes, the smartphone is a beautiful thing. I've used it on the fly for fish researching too. A couple of weeks ago I was at Petsmart getting some bloodworms. A customer asked about the compatibility of two different types of fish. The employee told them they weren't compatibile because they required different levels of nitrate and nitrite. Had a good chuckle over that one.

Also an employee at a petsmart I went to thinks that every cichlid is a super mean living terror nightmare making extremely aggressive fish. Now I go to petsmart to buy rosy red minnows and crickets only.
