if your tex died of columnaris you would prob. want to DRAIN TANK AND START OVER.. it would be a shame if several new fish got sick.. that columnaris is BAD STUFF:irked:

If you are OK w/ frequent WC, I would suggest group of discus and dithers. Geophagus also makes very nice community tank. 5-6 red heads, 1-2 abalios/altifron, and 2-3 rotkeils/super red severums would be perfect for that size.

Like Miguel said the salvini is a nice fish and a good medium size cichlid. I like everything on your list I do however especially like salvini and firemouths. I have never kept them together so I dont know how they would be. Geophagus are nice but I like a large group of Acarichthys heckelii. I know some LFS even refer to them as Geophagus Heckelii.

This^

I would clean the eniter tank with either white vinagar or lemon juice. I would be a shame to invest in a group of fish and have them get sick. I know it's a pain but you have to start over. IMO the risk is too great.

The tank is empty because I moved him to a 30g when he got sick. I will clean out the big one with vinegar (bleach seems harsh?) but what about the filter media? I have a FX 5 and would like to be able to use all that good bacteria.

No point in sterilizing the tank if you're not going to sterilize the filter. That's like getting covered in mud and cleaning everything except above your shoulders. Your beneficial bacteria has probably starved off at this point anyway.

Household bleach is a very good disinfectant, and very easy to remove from a tank when it has run its course. Simply do a couple 100% water changes and use a good amount of dechlorinator.

Vinegar might work to some extent, but honestly bleach is cheaper, easier to use, and more effective.

I moved my filter to the 30 so the bacteria is still good but you suggest discarding all media and starting over? Thanks

I would start over. This is a case of it being better to error on the side of caution.

Clockwork is correct bleach is effective and easly removed with the use of declor. I don't recomend it if the tank is in a place where the bleach could damage or ruin anything in your home. If the tank is in a fish room or someplace where bleach can't damage anything use it. If the tank is somplace where you are worried, the white vinagar or lemon juice will work.
