Life of having a pleco

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a high fin yellow spotted pleco named Mustard. I have had him about 7 years. He is king of the tank over a Oscar and bichirs. When I clean the tank he chases my hand for me to stop and pet him between the eyes:)

Well it was an albino red zebra cichlid (Maylandia estherae) and has slowly developed that peachy color in the 2 months I've had him. So he's a weird albino, that's not really an albino.

He constantly stalks the front of the tank wanting to be fed, all of my Africans are pigs and are always begging, as much, if not worse than my oscar.

I have the same fish. Always wondered what it was. And it picked on a jack Dempsey I had.

I agree so much ****... I have a gold nugget and two sailfins have to clean every day or every other day hate that ****. If I give it more than two days is it going to harm the rest of my tank?

It probably picked on it because they're very aggressive and shouldn't have even been together. Completely differnt parts of the world and way different temperments. The only S. American or C. American cichlid I would mix with Africans are convicts. But that can be iffy too. But I've had really good luck with my convicts with them. They all do wonderful together but a JD I would be scared to put with Africans, I think they would end up killing it so fast.

That is awesome. My pleco, Charlemagne, was so shy but he's getting to were he will follow my hand in the tank when I am cleaning it. Still a little shy but he's starting to warm up to me (:

I've allways had Plecos. They're essential to keeping the glass crystal clear of algea and picking up left overs around the tank. This may help your poop problem; Don't focus on feeding the Pleco. They will find food left over from their tank mates and it keeps them hungry for algea where ever they can find it. If there is natural wood in the tank watch to see if your Pleco is munching on it. (Shrinking wood deco). Once your tank is free of algea the poop problem will go away. Good luck Monsta!

I don't have any algae though, and making them rely on finding food to eat and not giving them things they need in their diet isn't good. Starving them is the only way the "poop problem" will be solved and that' just not right. He's healthy and that's why he poops a lot, it comes with having a pleco. They are not algae eaters, and if anyone has them to be an algae eater, then they have them for the wrong reason. Even though most pet stores will tell you that they are algae eaters. They are not essential what so ever. There is no reason you NEED a pleco in your tank, if you want an algae eateer, get a Chinese algae eater.

I have been slacking lately and it isn't hurting my tank. I mean I do my weekly water changes and will do the vac but I haven't been doing it every day or anything. It seems my lace catfish is eating the poop. hahah. gross, but I guess it's his thing.

I had to find that out the hard way. I bought it not knowing what it was until now.
