life spans of fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sad day for me after several weeks of general lethargy lost my loach. 3 weeks short of his 25th. He measured 7.5" and weighed close to 1#.

I have an old Koi USA mag (really old) that mentions a 225 year old Koi. I remember the article said the fish was older than the United States. I think they counted the rings in its scales to verify, like a tree. Long lives is one of the things that really attracted me to koi.

Yeah that Koi apparently lived in a natural Pool of a Stream that the owner somehow fenced off. They say the fresh water helped it Live so long.

Edit: Hanako is the Name of the fish, lots of search results on Google for "hanako Koi"

It's hard to believe a Koi can outlive giant tortose, but it is true:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tortoise

Tortoises generally have the longest lifespans of any animal, and some individuals are known to have lived longer than 150 years.[5] Because of this, they symbolize longevity in some cultures, such as China. The oldest tortoise ever recorded, and one of the oldest individual animals ever recorded, was Tu'i Malila, which was presented to the Tongan royal family by the British explorerCaptain Cook shortly after its birth in 1777. Tu'i Malila remained in the care of the Tongan royal family until its death by natural causes on May 19, 1965, at the age of 188.[6] The record for the longest-lived vertebrate is exceeded only by one other, a koi named Hanako whose death on July 17, 1977 ended a 226-year life span.[7]

Yeah Hanako. I think he had just died when that Koi USA mag came out. Outlived 3 or 4 owners.

sorry to hear that matey.

It's crazy to think but a lot of the "disposable" or beginner community fish have impressive lifespans. Like goldfish, convicts, silver dollars, some loaches. It's claimed that corydoras catfish can live well over 20 years. My dad had some that were over 10 years old back when I was a kid before he sold off all of his stock.
