Lighting a 55 planted tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What lights are you currently using?

The fixture is a 4 x 36 power compact that just doesn't light it up too good anymore. Its an older fixture and I just want to get a new fixture. The one I ordered should be at my house this afternoon when I get home from work.

I should have just changed out the bulbs, but for the price I paid for the new fixture, I almost would have spent the same amount on bulbs. And with the new fixture, it has a built in timer and 4 led moonlights that look great.

for high tech planted tank. your better off going with T5's. ur going to spend way more then $250 if ur gonna go led and want it high tech. moderate lighting and good co2. you can grow anything. co2 is more important then a high light.

I got the new T5's yesterday. 3x54 watt T5HO's and I love the new fixture. I should have done this a long time ago.

Cool, Is the fixture getting hot after few hours of use?

One more question, how tall is the fixture on top of your tank with leg attachments. I have 4.75 inch clearance in my canopy so want to make sure the fixture will fit with the legs in the canopy. Thanks for your help.

With the legs on it is 5 3/4 inches tall but without them on it is 2 3/4 inches tall. They do make a hanging kit for it and I am pretty sure that you could make it so it mounts to the top instead of hanging it.

i have been doing a lot of shopping around for lights, and their assemblies. and what i found MOST economical and easy to use is actually going to a hydroponics store and purchasing a light from them. they are extremely cheap and are HIGH-VERY HIGH output. they don't come with aquarium mounting clips and brackets, but.. it isn't hard to engineer something. literally these fixtures are 1/4-1/3 LESS than "aquarium" brand fixtures. so if money is a problem this could be a good route :)
