in the empty 55 gallon, any thoughts on getting a lima shovelnose catfish? i know they get decently sized, but they are more of a calmer catfish, so would this work out? thanks :)

Lima Shovelnose can get 2 feet. Elongus Shovelnose gets a foot. In a 55 gallon I would think a footlong catfish wouldn’t do good in a 13 inch width tank. What about bumble bee catfish, I know of 3 species, South American, Asian, and giant. Getting sizes of South American 4in, Asian 8in, and Giant 12in.

It’s not a active swimming fish but more of posting up on decor/plants.

Elongatus will get 12in. True limas will get big to about 18-20in. Just don’t know what you’ll get but don’t see many over 1 ft in the US.

IMO even an Elongatus would get to big for a 55, I would go with a Hoplo. Mine is one of the most active fish I have, he is active all the time and will take food out of my hand.

aight thanx yall! not sure yet, but def not a true lima

Just wondering, what species are the Lima Shovelnose catfish found in most lfs? True or elongatus?

Glad you asked the question but as said, no, tank not big enough.
Quite a number of other catfish choices so would need to know what kind of fish u r looking for, noting that lima are not really interactive catfish and more of a shoaler.
in the UK most are true lima so 18-24" after a couple of years.

Size on Sun cats had a big question mark against it but in my view they grow over a foot and like company so again would be a little large, unless you got the black collared cat of the same species which tend to max out under a foot.
again comes down to what you want.
one catfish in a 55 alone and I would expect you wanting something more interactive like one of the smaller bagrids, or a smaller pair like fossil cats. (Just note that fossil cats are dangerous though).

From my experience you could house several LSN in a 55 gal for a few years but then you will need a upgrade.
