Liquid waterproofing/pond liner?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very nice info ithurtz! Ive been waiting to see another liner tank and some proof/results on 5200. Funny ive seen the pictures before but didnt know from where. It sounds like the pl sealant is very similiar to gold label. No odor and very very thick. Cant believe its fairly cheap aswell :) i may have to use this on my 3k. I have 3yrs. Running with gold label...how long have u you had a tank running with the pl sealant?

So Im headed toward using epoxy resin now, but where can I get one that is fish safe. I have searched pond armour, and rubberizeit (not epoxy?), but beyond that, is there anything else I can purchase. I plan to order soon. I know for sure they dont sell anything thats safe for fish here on Oahu.

-Thanks

I forgot to comment on you being in Oahu. Have you looked at the other two builds here of MFK from posters in Hawaii? I think one was on the main island and the other from one of the smaller ones. I can't remember their user-names at the moment. The more recent of the two used polyester resin and a liquid rubber type product, both of which he found locally. I think the other may have used a tile membrane of some sort. I'll have to look it up later.

As far as ordering, I assume it's cheaper to order stuff from California? If so aeromarineproducts.com carries a marine epoxy resin I've heard good things about. I think Max ACR is also out of California.

Is there no distributor of pond liners anywhere in the Hawaiian islands? I would think there would be, but maybe it's just too expensive to stock much of anything there.

I think only a few months now. The 330gal 5200 tank was up for 2 years. Moved and the tank wouldnt fit in the house.

There are a few distributors on Oahu that sell pond lining. But after reading ithurtz previous post, Im headed more toward getting an epoxy, after seeing how I can get more for my buck. The dimensions of my tank are 78"x34"x36". And being that a gallon of either liquid rubber or sweetwater epoxy can get me more than enough sqft. per gallon. I decided to just be patient, and order it through them.

I looked through isaacs "500g piece of furniture) and actually used a few of his techiniques for making my build. But I cant find the other member from Hawaii. Im interested in finding out what he used to waterproof his tank, and see if its readily available here.

I think you mean my post, not Ithurtz's post, but that doesn't matter. For the record, I was talking about epoxy resin, not epoxy paint like Sweetwater. Sweetwater is only 70% solids and has hazardous material shipping charges. From Florida to Oahu is likely going to be very expensive. But with that said, I have used Sweetwater and like it a lot. The solvents make it much more like paint to work with. It does have a strong odor, however, so I don't recommend applying it indoors. A 100% solids epoxy resin doesn't have any solvents.

By the way, a gallon of liquid rubber and a gallon of Sweetwater won't have the same coverage rates since the liquid rubber needs to be applied much thicker.

Here are the two threads that I know of from Hawaii residents.

I know you already have the first one but thought I'd post it anyways for others following this thread.

Ok so I scored some FREE waterproof caulk from work. Pretty sure no one has heard of it. NP1 waterproof caulking. We use it here to seal joints (along with fiberglass tape) to reinforce and water proof decks, for houses. After that there is a self-leveling sealant that goes over, followed by another coat of waterproofing. BUT I managed to score a few tubes of caulking and a roll of fiberglass tape. As for the second level of waterproofing, I also scored about a gal and a half of "laticrete floor coating" for tile floors, and wood floors.

Really not sure on which method of "fish safe" epoxy to go with yet. I really wish they sold something of that type here locally. Mainly because I hate to have to wait on an order from the mainland. But Im sure it would be worth the wait.

I'd be very surprised if you couldn't find marning epoxy resin in Oahu or elsewhere in the Hawaiian islands. It's a surfing destination and there must be many shops that build epoxy surfboards and/or do epoxy surfboard repair. There are probably places that buy resin and hardener by the pail or drum that would sell you a bit. Heck, you could probably even get some of the cured epoxy scraped off the floor for free and test the fish-safeness of it yourself with some feeders.

I have never heard any marine epoxy resin not being fish safe but do understand that many epoxy companies don't bother getting their products rated as potable water (or fish) safe because that's not the market they're aiming for.

If you do get a sample from a surf board company make sure it doesn't have any of the UV resistant varnish they use on it. That's the one part that would worry me with fish.

By the way, NP Polyurethane Caulks are pretty common on the mainland. They are distributed by Home Depot so they are everywhere.

I live on the Big Island, and I can get marine grade resins from any and all ace hardware stores in hawaii. I wanted to go that route with the blue resin pigments, but I was way over budget @ the time and epoxy based resins cost double what polyester does. I ended up using Zophar, which works good, but it's black and not that pretty. Black just seems to absorb the light. The blue would have been way nicer. Zophar can be bought @ ace also. When I build my next plywood aquarium, i'll definately shell out the extra cash ans use the epoxy resin as my sealer & top coat. Marine grade epoxy resin sold here by hawaii fiberglass is completely water proof & safe for fish. Here's the brand of fiberglass I used and pictures of the zophar sealant I used.
