my 2 year old is smart and kind climb well it seems. I left the a lid off my 55 gal, and she thought my convict was hungry. she dumped a can 3/4 full of fish food in there. i didn't notice till i was headed to bed, she even told me she feed it. I moved the convict back to the tank with his brother. I started to suck out what i could with a gravel cleaner suction. 15 gal in I realized it was hopeless and went to bed. The filter intakes clogged and I just turned them off, with the intention of starting over. I came home from work this morning to some very bad looking water. I cleaned more up around the filter intakes, add more water and turned the filters back on. just did a water change/cleaning with the filling hose running too. I removed 40 gals of water and junk. rinsed on of the hob filters and add a new one with charcoal still in it. there is still food in there, I plan to do daily cleaning starting on wednesday. my nitrates and nitrites are good, my ammonia is in the danger block. My tad poles are doing great.

Any other suggestions?

Lots and lots of water changes. Put fish food in use pill bottles with kid proof lids, and teach your daughter fish only like to eat a little bit. Show her everything you have to do to keep the fishies house clean and she will eventually learn the right thing to do. :D and you make a future fishkeeper at the same time

kids listen, so jus tell them a few times over n over and sooner or later they understand. my lil 5 year old bother raised a 2" oscar to almost 6" now and he's proud at the same time. he knows to feed twice a day in small portions and to much will do more harm then good. he doesn't kno how to do water changes tho so he jus sits n watches as i do it but atleast he's learning.

I use a Bio Blend container I've refilled with Hikari microwafers and micropellets. If she's only ever allowed to feed the fish salt and pepper style with a shaker, you'll limit how much she can put in(by accident)

Switching to pellets or crisps could also allow you to turn feeding time into counting time.

I use 8 and 16 ounce parmesan cheese shakers to hold flake, pellets, sticks, and crumbles. A little modelers glue holds the large dump side lid shut so only the side with the 3 shaker holes can be opened.

Great Idea Oddball, I am going to switch to that just because it seems a lot easier.

I don't allow children in my neighborhood, seems to work for me. LOL
