So I walked into my LFS today to pick up some more food, and noticed the two managuense that have been there finally laid eggs. After letting them charge my finger, a man walks in with his wife and daughter, and the daughter screams "daddy! what is that?" (referring to the jags). The dad walks up to the tank, and says, "Those are plecostomus, they're algae eaters, and big ones too!" (there were no plecos in the tank). Afterward, the entire family places their fingers on the glass, and talk about how cool they are that they "follow" their fingers (while the jags are literally biting/ scratching the inside of the acrylic). After about 3 minutes, the wife says, "sweetie, I think those are piranhas."
Noticing my laughter, they included me into the conversation about how cool they were. After I informed them the basics, about the fry, aggressiveness, and that they were called Jaguar cichlids (because no one understands managuense if they don't know about fish) the husband talked about how these cichlids were way different than his cousins, and he was positive the fish in the tank were plecostomus, as he pointed to the only sticker on the corner of the tank with a pic of a pleco and price per inch.
I couldn't help them, so I just said, "oh, ok."
a few minutes after, the family goes to the convicts, and tries to pick out a male and female for their 5 gallon aquarium. Luckily, the owner refused them the fish, but it was just mind blowing how clueless people who keep fish can be. I'm no expert, but I know the basics pretty well.. I just didn't know how to handle this situation.
