my 11 yr-old sister wants to keep a betta fish. what size of tank suitable for one betta and can plants give it enough oxygen without an air pump? need some advice. thank you. :)

A good size tank for a betta is a 5gallon. Put in a hob filter for mechanical filtration. Bettas are actually air breather so don't worry about O2 level of water, but plants will help with biological filtration

Hi,
Bettas are great! I have 3. Each has its own 5 gallon tank, which is the perfect size! They really do use the whole tank. It's nice and small, but not too small.
This size tank is nice because it's big enough for one nice decoration, plus a driftwood/plant combo from PetCo (Anubias) - looks great, and the bettas do well.
I honestly do not even use a filter or pump on the tank - it's not needed. Do use a 25 W heater, though. Many people don't even use a heater, but if your room gets cold, you will want one. The fish are much more active with a little heat, as well.

Totally disagree on the no filtration route. Bettas still poop, and betta poop with break down into ammonia, and ammonia will still be toxic even if its not at a lethal dose. You can get by on "no filtration" if you plan on big changes water changes every couple of days, but remember this will be owned by an 11 year old child.
Totally agree with heater. These fish have evolved to withstand very high water temp, so keeping their water at about 80 will make them very happy.

thanks guys for all ure suggestions. :) yup, will buy a filter. but i saw many people dont use filter. hahah btw, im in a tropical country which can get very hot as well.
my sister loves the crowntail betta, haha. saw one in a lfs and theyre are beautiful. :D
can a 2 feet tank suitable for bettas? just askin cuz i havent purchased a 5 gallon tank.

In regards to the fish, the bigger the better. In regards to maintenances, its more work. Maybe you should put in a non-see-thru divider and have 2 bettas. Will probably make your lil sister twice as happy!

well, more work needs to be done and ill let my sister do most of the work. i have my own fish to take care of, now she needs to take more responsibilities. :)
tht's good idea ! how about a breeding pair? will make my sister a hundred times happier. hahahahah :)

I have my betta in a ten gallon tank and he uses every inh of it. This guy is going on two years old. My last one lived to be three. I have no filter running but I do 50 % changes twice a week. Water chemistry stays where is should be. He is as responsive as my red devil. Definitely the most under rated and under appreciated fish out there.

Cannot keep a breeding pair. Males and females do not work like that. He will kill her.

ohh, they dont grow bigger do they?
really? well, better keep just one. much less space to use and less work to do. hahah

My veil tail grow kinda big. He was a beast. But my current crown tail is pretty small. Has only grown a little since I brought him home.
