  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've had it and didn't much care for and neither did my armatus for some reason. It is marketed as basa or swai.

That's one I have never seen locally. I have seen frozen fillets but live fish, no.

For some reason it seemed to have a really greasy very UN-catfish-like taste and texture to it.....IDK if I just didn't cook it right or what - I usually do seafood like a natural-born gourmet - but there was just something about it I didn't like, and I really am reluctant to say there's a fish I don't like,.....I 'm one of those guys that can even make Bluefish taste good. Maybe I'll try again one day

Frozen but most of the fish that I eat is as well.
yea see if I try it again, I want it fresh or at least never F/T. I like my fish as fresh as can be....meaning I'll bring home a stringer of trout, clean the 1st two and have them in the frying pan before I even finish cleaning the other 3 lol

The market I stopped at mostly sell reef fish like Parrotfish, Surgeonfish, moi, Trevally and 15-20 different types of near shore/reef fish. The only non frozen freshwater fish are tilapia, Clarias and Dojo loaches.

1.) I thought Parrotfish and Surgeon was toxic because of all the coral they eat?
2.) What species of FW fish do you guys actually have NATIVE to HI? I'm guessing SMB and Channel cats were introduced from the mainland?

There's rare cases of ciguatera in those species but they are still eaten commonly

FW species are few freshwater gobies called O'opu. You see those guys more in the upper streams. The island I live on has no gamefish but a few introduced exotics. I grew up on Kauai and they have the gamefish and some on O'ahu

Yeah I'll stick with American catfish which I love to eat and do actually purchase fresh.
