I just came back from my trip to Florida. Had a great time and since I drove down from Canada I got to see a lot of the U.S. While in Florida I went down to the keys and spent a few days on the beach. While on the beach I collected a lot of shells, and pieces of what looks to be ex live rock. Ex meaning it was attached to the reef but broke off and drifts to the beaches. I am sure you have all seen these on the shores at beaches, it looks all white with very similar shapes and markings of live rock. It is very porous with lots of little holes, looks almost like a honeycomb from a beehive. Is this stuff what I think it is or is it something else????

1.) Is it safe to add to aquarium??? Any steps to prepare it for the tank, like best way to clean it???

2.) Will it turn into live rock and help biofiltrate my water???

3.) My tank is a 150 FOWLR which already has 150lbs of live rock and a 55 gallon sump. I have maybe 10lbs of this rock from the beach. Will this cause a large cycle in my tank??? or not at all??

I wouldn't add it. All you are doing is introducing anything and everything from the wild as far as parasites and other contaminents.

We found a bunch of live rock in the keys when we were diving, we have some in our 45gallon tank now and its cool.

Any time you add new live rock to a established system it may cause it ti MINI cycle again. Meaning you may get a Diatom algae outbreak for a few weeks. I am not a fan of taking from the wild. The people you buy from has permits and a set amount that they are allowed to take from the wild. Also any rock you put in your system will turn live after a period of time if you already have live rock.

Private property means nothing. It's a State regulation.
Yep. The same as how even homeowners on their own property can be restricted from things as simple as cutting down a tree because of a city or state regulation. Kinda makes you re-think the term "Private" or "Own", because quite simply, when it comes to nature or wildlife, the city and state are still in control of what you can and cannot do. Sucks, but thats how it is, so just be carefull, that can carry with it a citation with a heavy fine, or worse depending on the location, amount and item taken.

I'm confused your telling me those washed up pieces on the beach which little kids play with and add to there sand castles are illegal to take?????? wow I would laugh in the cops face if he said that to me. I would tell him that while he is watching me collect harmless "ROCKS" from the beach shore and then write me up a ticket there was probably 10-20 drug deals happening on the beach. Give me a break. Pathetic politicians..... me taking washed up "ROCKS" is illegal although they receive funding for their campaigns from companies who destroy those very beaches and reefs from which those rocks come from. Now that I know this, next time I'm coming with a uhaul and I'm gonna fill the damn thing.

Thats goverments for ya. There a joke wherever you go.
Who cares. Take what you want within reason ofcourse and just dont get caught.
