which world are you living in!
have you heard of the DOVII cichlid!?
some scavenger huh!
u really crack me up...
dovii dont scavenge they hunt!
and i am willing to bet any fish would eat a dead fish ...(in the wild)
rather than hunting for one
ANY FISh

Apex means that they are at the top of there food chain. And no other fish in there respected area could eat them. i believe dovii get to around 20'' or less. And they are a central american fish which puts them in the same waters with other bigger predators that might consume them. So IMO they might be a borderline apex predator. But if the ventured to south america they would not.

Errrrr....wrong!!! There are a lot of fish that will not touch a dead fish floating and would choose to hunt. Most fish need some sort of stimulation to attack.

very true, I have said it time and time again that most true preds will not touch a dead or diseased fish. And i have seen this behaviour several several times.

I have noticed that when I feed live and say one fish hits a feeder but does not eat it and the feeder swims around injured, That my higher level predators with pay no attenion to the injured feeder. It becomes invisable to them. Even though it would be a much easier meal they will not eat it. The only fish that i have in that tank that will consume injured or dead fish is my p-bass and my bichir. Yet again not even close to a top shelf predators.

Thats why i have allways said that apex preds will not get bacteria related sickness's from eating sick feeders. Because they won't eat them unless they are starved.

Actually in the wild Dovii are known to attain 40 inches-in tanks atleast 24 inches. You do know that P. Bass are also cichlid? So if a Dovii in your opinion is not an apex predator you mean to tell me that your predatory characin are? I find it hard to believe that full grown Ace. or pretty much any Characin could take a full size Dovii, Umbee, or even something as small as a Red Devil.

Weened as in I can starve my fish for a few days or weeks and then it will eat what I want it too. Thats a joke.

That is why IMO cichlids are better survivors than a lot of these so called "apex predators" They don't need live food to strive whatever is available they eat!! My buddy has a wide variety of Predatory Characins and outside of watching them eat other fish they are quite boring and skittish.

Bottom line is to each his/her own. Personally I vary my diet whether it be a cichlid, characin, gar, catfish, or any other fish.

BTW for those who do only use feeders notice the color of the fishes poop-black. I bet when you vacuum the bottom of your tanks you pick up tons of black waste. Back when I was ignorant I only fed my Clown Knife live food and his poop was black-really how healthy can that be?

40".......I would have to see to believe. I searched and could not find one supposedly over 30" Many Characins could swallow a Dovii whole(well a non-fairytale sized one).

Yeah I could find it hard to believe any characins, even an Armatus or GATF, could take a dovii, Umbee, or red devil especially from the pics below? mmmmm....Looks bite size.
