Local Aquarium Club/Society

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice! I do not think we will get that amount of people but... we can try .. send me the info on the next meeting

Next meeting of the North Jersey Aquarium Society will be on Thursday, May 21 (always the third Thursday of the month). Meetings held at the Quality Inn, 10 Polito Avenue, Lyndhurst, NJ 07071 - 7:45pm. Bob Grauer is the guest speaker. He will present a program on Tanganyikan Cichlids. There will be a fish and plant auction after the talk.

There is a small reef club up here in my neighborhood. Basically just an online forum for discussion, etc. There is talk of expanding the forum to include a freshwater section, which I hope happens. Several years ago a club was going. We had some nice presenters come up (Anthony Calfo for one), but money, politics, and personalities wreaked it.
I'm also from Maine you mean there is actually a fish club here somewhere??

I've been a member of Sacramento Aquarium Society (SAS) for quite a few years now. They have speakers, an,auction and raffle at each monthly meeting and a mega-auction twice a year. The meetings and auctions are open to non-members also. Last night's speaker was Ron Coleman about his trips to Costa Rica to research behaviors of cichlids. Interesting stuff.

I think clubs provide that "in real life" interaction that Internet sites can't provide. I've been frequenting NJAS functions for the past few months and it's been a blast. Between monthly meetings, auctions, new names and faces, and the networking, no regrets. I highly encourage you guys to get out and get involved in your local clubs.

They may not understand or agree with the monster side of the hobby, but we're all soldiers in the same struggle LOL

And once you are known as the monster guy in the club, people will contact you about fish that are being given away that grew too big.

Hmm maybe I should hit up the next club meeting. Are there monthly dues?
it is 25 bucks for the whole year.. some decent benefits come with it too..discounts at stores etc... most of us NNJ guys have joined and been going

Ours is $18 a year but you can come to meeings anyway. At auctions you keep an additional 5% of the money if you join. All of the LFS give 10% off on livestock. Some even give it on hardware and food. There is a members only section on the forum. Members can see the for sale stuff a few days sooner. We do DIY workshops that non-members have to pay to participate. We give lots of incentives to join.
