Local Fish Store Best Lies

I was with a friend once who was buying a bunch of demasoni from petsmart. They were on sale for some ridiculous price. After going round and round over the whole "you cant add so many at once" speil, he asked her to bag up the two Demasoni that slipped into the "assorted african" tank adjacent to it. She insisted that they weren't demasoni and were "assorted african cichlids" and therefore not compatible. He persisted and she finally agreed to sell them, but refused to price them at the Demasoni price, and used the "assorted african" price instead....which at the time was much higher. This was a brutal case of someone who just doesn't get ANYTHING you're trying to explain, and does not want to.

I've seen this a few times at petsmart with their tank system, tiny fish can fit right through their slotted dividers.

Just for the record it's not always the employee's fault, they were probably just thrown into the position and not trained. I work at a pet store and if it weren't for me doing my own research on fish I'd be reading people off information on the tags as we are trained to do. It's sad but the companies just don't educate their employees on the special needs of fish (or other animals that we sell, for that matter).

They do that near me too, my neighbour bought one, trying to convince me it was a blue lobster. Quite clearly a Cray fish. He was expecting it to reach about a foot long etc. 18 months later its still only 6" but he won't believe me!

Lobster can be a common name for some crayfish. In addition there are some imported species that get to be quite large.

I had a guy argue with me that a Boccourti was a Synspilum. I even compared and contrasted pictures via google and he still told me I was wrong haha regardless I got a 8" Boccourti for $15

I bought a pacu when I first got my 220 the petco workers asked what size tank I told him 50 gallons (while my 220 cycled he didn't know I had a 220) he suggested I get a second on for my big 50 gallon tank

Getting told my barramundi would grow to the size of the tank. 3 months later with a 6" barra in a 5 gallon aquarium... That was years ago and the barramundi has since died from velvet in a 150g in 2010.

I knew a local pet store that sold flounder's labeled as small ray's, after people got tired of the nonsense the pet store went out of business.
