Well after searching and searching for Festae I though I found some at my lfs and so I picked out 3 fish out of the tank labelled Festae and when I got home I "checked" my work only to find out they were ugly uros again. Why can't the stores just tell the truth? I don't understand how they can properly identify almost any fish (i quiz them) but the day I don't I end up with worthless and ugly fish like Mayan cichlids
If you did a little research over on the internet, you should learn NEVER to trust lfs. Lots of stories of LFS giving false info. If I were you, I would take a picture of the fish and post it here for an identification before getting it.
Remember, the LFS have everything to gain from lying while we have nothing to gain (except trolls). Online info is always the most reliable.
It might not be the lfs with the issues.
It could be the supplier they deal with.
Honestly, I know pretty much nothing about festae (so yeah, I would use the internet there)
but the lfs could be ordering festaes and know nothing about them.
The supplier sends them something that somewhat looks like a festae and they don't question it.
A lot of mistakes happen with suppliers. Heck, I ordered OB red zebras and they sent me red zebras. When I asked about it to the supplier it was pretty much, sorry, we sent you OB red Zebras, you must not know what they look like, or they will gain different colours as they grow...
I still say if the buyer knows exactly what they want and researched the fish they want, then there would be no issues what so ever.
IMO, it is more important for the buyer to educate themselves about the fish since that is a much easier route than getting every pet store worker to understand everything about fish (not possible).
Spend sometime researching the fish you want and there will be no problems. Bring a picture of what you want or ask if you can take pictures and post them on MFK to confirm what species they are selling. Very few LFS will say no, you can't take pictures haha
My point is that its false advertisement. They listed the fish by its currently accepted scientific name, and upon inspection it was an entirely different breed of fish. Time to call my lawyer
This was posted in the "Lesson learned" section for a reason.
I think it is wrong of the LFS to mislabel fish. Whether they did it on purpose or not, we'll never know.
Out 5 out of the 6 LFS I go to, I notice that the people who work there are generally very ARROGANT about their fish knowledge. They feel like they are right because they work at a fish store and everyone else doesn't know what they are talking about... lol.
That's the biggest turn off I find at LFS.
As to doing your research before you buy, I've learned over the years NEVER to impulse buy with fish. If you see it in the fish store, google on your iphone or go home and look it up.
That's the best way to find the right info/requirement for the fish. Just smile and nod at the "most" LFS's advices... lol... their goal is only to sell as many fish as possible...
I look at it as "buyer beware". How many of us have delighted in the fact that the LFS didn't know what they had and we got an expensive fish for cheap!! It goes both ways, you win some you lose some.
