local fish stores lie too

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Still I went to the store and even after informing them if the mix up they still have the tank mislabelled. Perhaps they enjoy losing business from people who like to drop 50 to 75 bucks a week in their store on various trade goods and fish

Looks like the LFS did not know what they had and neither did you. Sorry but return the fish.

I am the worker at the pet store that said these OB Red Zebras are not OB red Zebras and contacted the supplier about it. I was not a buyer of it, I was the one that caught the mistake.

LOL

Sorry that you lost 25 bucks but I agree with most of the guys here. Its a risk you take and if your interested in particular fish, you need to educate yourself. I made the same mistake before and its true, 25 bucks is not bad in this hobby. Good luck on your next purchase.

Wait, let me take a step back and get this straight.

You are blaming the owner for not recognizing an "obvious" clue that it was the wrong fish, but you picked out the ones you wanted, watched him bag them, and didn't notice it yourself? And now your pissed because you got the wrong fish?

:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

100% your fault, no question. If you knew what you were buying, you wouldn't be in this situation.

Not to be cruel, but if you wanted a festae why did you buy a mayan? That was your money, your eye and your choice. You walked in, saw a mislabeled tank, and bought it anyway. It's all you. Our job is to outsmart fish stores, not be fooled by them.

This is one of the many fine reasons to go native. If you do your own collecting you never have to worry about a fish store lying to you and any mistakes are all on you. LOL sorry just had to get my native plug in there.:naughty:

lol, right on Joe.
You can not blame every LFS.
Some specialize in a certain type of stock so they could know less on some fish. I order stuff for many customers & I do not always know about every fish. I think I know a lot & considered in the industry as a Master Breeder. Have probably more years then most on this site.
I still get burned by suppliers or even the good old local club breeder!! Some fishes like Aul. peacocks when they are fry they basically look all alike but I take their word it is what it is. Then to find out down the road its not what we sold it as! Yeah I'm a bit pissed because it makes me look stupid but I explain it was not from our own hatchery etc.. I have had fry tanks info get erased & not know what they were. So either we raise them up to find out what they are or sell them as a mystery peacock or what ever & discount them so customer gets a deal & looks forward to see what it will turn out to be?
So there is a lot of variables when it comes to this business & hobby. So pointing a the finger at one or the other may not be the case always.

& bashing the LFS & trying to rip them off is not good for eveyone.
There is many around wishing that had a good LFS to support.
I hear it all the time.
Yeah there is some that open one & have no idea what they are getting into! They have a couple or few tanks raising angel fish etc.. & think its a great idea to open a store.
If it was so easy & you know it all then open one yourself.

At the time of purchase, I pulled out my phone and looked up pics of Festae fry on Google. Seeing the fish on a glance looked similar in the thumb nail I asked the owner to bag a select 3. I them asked the dude if he was positive they were Festae as I had some doubt. He replied yep those are Festae and pointed at the tag on the tank and even went down a fish characteristics list such as whether or not it had bars, showed me the "y" bar on the three, in retro spect the y wasn't complete. So I did the nourish mistake of paying for the fish on his word and from a picture from Google. I got home did somemore research realized they were the wrong fish. Confronted the owner and got told to pies off because I wanted to return my fish for a refund or instore credit. Then the fish died anyway.

I went to the shop today with images and evidence as to why the tank was marked wrong. But the owner said who cares its not worth his time to change the label on a tank with 6 fish in it

I work at a LFS and you would be surprised what the lists LFS order from have.

"Long Nose Knifefish"
"Red Tail Cuda" (brycon not barracda)

Not to imagine most wholesalers have "altum" angels in year round. Yet very rarely these come in as Altums.

We also ordered Polypterus palmas and got brown senegals in. I told my boss that they looked like Senegals and he agreed and relabeled them.

My boss ordered Festae many times, and everytime they came in they were not real festaes. The same thing happens with GATF most of the time.

Most of the time, LFS order fish that they do not feel 100% sure about and when they come in as a different but similar fish they don't always know the difference.

The "unreputeable LFS" by me will order "altum angels" from the wholesale list then label them as altums when they come in because they can't tell the difference. And they do this with most fish. I haven't seen LFS order something, then call it something else that it is clearly not.

Almost all of the mislabeling comes directly from the wholesaler IME.
