Logistics of growing out?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Never too much research man congrats on the wedding

They lok small now but your 125 gal and my 150 are just drops in a bucket for these fish.

This right here. A 125 might be too small to keep the 5 fish you have now. Add a Lyonsi to that 125, let him get 6-8 inches, and you've got chaos. JDs get rough sometimes. Chocloates and Severum get big. Polleni is no slouch.

Have you considered a 300 Gallon? And a sump? Community of big fish is hard in a big tank when they get to be 6-8 inches, and close to adulthood. In a 125, it's just no likely as Jaws is saying. That's why they call it growing OUT--out of a 125. :)

Oh no, the chocolate and the severum are getting the 55 when I move the JD and likes to a bigger tank.

I have a theory about the Umbee guys on here. I think they all started out like us, trying to make a community of big fish work in a tank, then they got a bigger tank, then a monster tank, and finally just gave up and put an Umbee in their big tank alone. I bet 5 yeas from now, we'll all be posting pics of our single Umbee's on MFK, talking about all the other fish we "used to have".

So this is my guess here the jd and gt are gonna grow slow. As the others have said the lyonsi may grow like a weed. Know nothing about the polleni

Lol if these were my fish it would play out like this....lyonsi claims tanks harrasses smaller fish, smaller fish grow even slower because of stress and maybe the lyonsi turns out be be an aggressive eater, smaller fish dont get there share.....jaws has to rehome MORE fish lol

Or buy a bigger tank. :)

Or I could splurge, get a 180, find a GT same size as my JD and get a small Lyonsi. Still too far in the future atm to tell though.

Buphy--

You're hearing, but you're not really HEEEEAAAAAARRRINNG......if you're gonna splurge, then splurge on a BIG tank. Wny limit yourself? Do this. Get a tape measure, go to the longest wall in your house, and see how many feet it is. 10 feet? 12 feet? What would the room look like if you put a tank 36 inches wide there? 48 inches?

Of COURSE you're not really gonna BUY something that big......but, turst me, just put a tape measure on it.....think about it.....what's the wife say when you put the idea out there....how cool would it be to have a sump bigger than any tank you currently own...what could you keep in a tank that big.....how would you run the auto water changer....stingray would be really cool....especially one of those black ones with white spots.

I'm just sayin'....you've put quite a bit of thought into a 75/125. Why not put some thought into a 600 gallon? Don't cost nothing to think about it. Put a tape measure up on the wall. :)

Know what I did? For about a month, I'd walk in the living room with my tape measure while my wife was watching a show she really liked, pull out 8 feet of the tape measure, say "hey baby, hold the end of that for me". "Whatcha doin'" "Aw, nothin. Just measuring" "what for?" "Nothin". Went on like that for weeks. :)

Oh, I have dreams. Dreams of 1,500 gallons worth of tanks reasonable placed through out a house. However, I currently live in an apartment and have not finished my engineering (actually have yet to start, got out of the navy less than a year ago).

Side note, sadly stingrays aren't legal in Texas, I've checked (without a permit).

You could move to Louisiana. We have everything Texas has with better food, drive thru daiquiri shops, and stingrays are legal :)
