Lonenose gar with Tiger shovelnose catfish?

i agree with richard (polypterus) on this. bad idea with the situation as is, don't get another big fish for an already cramped tank until you get the bigger tank. TSN's come around all the time, so it's best for everyone (including headaches for you should the longnose break it's back or dealing with ridiculous bioload) if you just hold off until the bigger tank. good luck--

PS-- agree on the shortnose issue too...i've kept my fair share of them and none of them have acted like the one in question...great for the owner/fish, but should not be extrapolated to represent the species in general--

I agree with the above...after the MUCH larger tank is aquired and properly set up, the combo could work fairly well.

I have seen nothing in Ethnics post entailing a "general" statement as to the suitability of Shortnose Gars with TSN's. As far as I understand it, Ethnics wrote about his particular experience, starting with an appropriate caveat.

actually if you look at his post there is some mention of generalization:

"not saying yours will work without issues, but i havea shortnose gar with my tsn but in a 400gal comm. i even have 2 spotted gars in there as well. i've never personally owned a longnose gar but if the temperment is anywhere near the same u should be okay.

my shortnose gar was 22 inches and my tsn was abuot 12 when i first put them together. the tsn has caught up to it since, and everything is still gravy"

i don't have a personal issue with ethnics by any means, and i applaud his ability to keep a shortnose that big and that well for so long (and in that combination of fishes), but if you look at the highlighted statements and follow the context, it implies that a longnose would act the same as the shortnose in question, i.e., be fine with the combo.

this is not the case with your typical shortnose and therefore should not be applied to other gars because:

-we're not talking about a shortnose gar here, and they are typically quite spastic.

-a longnose gar generally behaves differently than a shortnose gar...as all species tend to have their own quirks.

-if this were relating to the Florida gars in question, then i would agree.

But he said IF the temperament is the same.

doesn't really matter...it's still implying a generalization. i could say an alligator gar would get along well with a goldfish half its size IF the gar's temperament was the same as the goldfish...but that just wouldn't be logical...--

Tank size is only a partial factor in the growth of a fish. In the end big fish still get big.
yeah, but i thought that gar would have been stunted in there...

how'd you get a LN gar that big in that small of a tank....
that puzzles me...
and i agree with solomon and richard.
as always...

still would like pics of the gar....

getting my gar to get quite big in 75 g. tank is not that hard. But nevertheless... I got this a new tank coming soon. The one I'm getting will be about 5' X 5' X 31". I wanted something that is big enough to house my gar, tsn, and pacu. I'll have some pictures later on this evening since I gotta head out to work now.
